Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Any BF'ers doing the Black Bear century MI.

I have yet to try it, but this year I am committed to do the 100 miles. It is known as the fastest century in Michigan. You usually get a tailwind and it is mostly flat with only two small hills, and overall drops in elevation. They tell you it is not a race, but yet there is a mass start foot race to your bike and they time you (through transponders)with awards for different categories. They expect 300 people this year and the weather forecast looks great. The guy I will be riding with finished in the lead pack averaging 25 Mph last year.

So anyone else from BF going to be there?

I'll be there, but not competing. I've got a friend competing, and I'll move his car up to Oscoda then ride the route backwards to Glennie and ride the last 25-30 miles with him. I've done the whole event myself, and although the hills don't qualify as much if you're used to mountains, they can be challenging in their own right. The first one is over a mile long and goes to 8-10% grade by the top. The second one is shorter. Both are about 250' vertical, and they are both in the second half of the route, so they serve to separate the men from the boys. Along the way, the route is not flat - there's lots of small hills, especially in the first 20 miles. The overall drop of about 550 feet for 100 miles is better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick, but it's not something you can tell while you ride. The year I did it, there was a headwind, and a detour made the route 106 miles long. Anybody not in a paceline suffered. I was halfway between the lead peloton and the second one.
