....i'm off to California for a family wedding, but have important races coming up, so need to keep riding (oh boy!).

Anyways, the bike is strapped to the roof, but i'm attempting to find place to ride.

Does anyone know of any long stretches of road without stoplights/stopsigns (or with as few as possible) in both the San Diego area (near Rancho Bernardo/Poway, but I can drive/ride to the place if it's not), and near Huntington Beach? Alternatively, any nice scenic rides would be cool too!

Check out the SoCal subforums. Are you looking for a solo route, an organized group, or just a general pack to ride with?

I'll be in the same bucket in a couple months. HB. Besides Bikely, are there any resources showing some well-trodden favorite routes? I don't do the single lane canyon stuff solo anymore -- safety is an important factor.

there are tons of places, check the socal forums. PCH (pacific coast highway) comes to mind. pretty popular among cyclists.

Of course, if you're coming from Austin I'd think you'll love the ride from Oceanside CA to Torrey Pines or San Diego along the Pacific Ocean. This ride isn't too far from Poway. Check a map. Ride highway 101 the entire length of the ride.

A good way to do the above ride could be to drive to Santa Fe train station in San Diego early in the morning, take the Coaster (train) to Oceanside w/bicycle then ride back to San Diego along 101. About a 44 mile ride.

Being its summertime. Least traffic encountered if you ride it on a weekday.

Another ride you might like is around San Diego Bay to Coronado. Then return across the bay on the ferry. Have lunch near ferry landing while waiting for ferry. Start at/near Broadway Pier at foot of Broadway. Here are directions: https://efgh.com/bike/rsdbay.htm

Enjoy San Diego/Poway. I enjoyed my short stay in Austin a couple of years ago. Watched Lance win his 7th TdF on TV at "The Tavern."

You can go along the river trail in HB for 30'ish miles w/o seeing a car.

I vote for a coastal ride from Carlsbad to the top of Torrey Pines and back, it's about 40 miles round trip and depending on lights you may have to stop a few times but riding with a few stops is better than not riding at all right?

Just take the 101 south and stop when you get to the top of a big hill overlooking the ocean, turn around and come back up the coast to Carlsbad. If you want to put in more miles you could always do it twice.

I live really south of where you will be, I'd love to see ya come out for a Sunday ride here but it is probably too far.

+1 the Santa Ana river trail which starts south of Brookhurst off of PCH runs 30 miles east into Corona, with not a light or stop in sight. Lots of bike traffic, relatively safe, and the pavement is clean. Have yet to get a flat on the river trail. No hills though, mostly flat with the occasional 80ft. ramp up/down every mile or so.
