Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bikes: Trek 4300

Trek 2100 - 54cm

I'm very new to all of this. I'm a mountain biker, but living in the flat lands it's not easy to jump into the backyard anymore and hit the trails.

I've found this used bike, a Trek 2100.

Trek 2100 - Composite Carbon Fiber frame, 54cm. Upgraded to Shimano RX100 shifters. Shimano 105 derailer. Look brand lock in pedals. Quick release front and rear wheels. New saddle and grip tape. Just put new Bontrager tires and tubes on as well.
Is this bike worth the $450 that is being asked for it?

As will get said many times, be wary of buying second hand carbon frames. Also make sure it fits.

I'm still riding a 1992 Trek 2100 frameset but with an late 90's Icon OCLV carbon fork and D/A 9sp stuff. I just did hill repeats on it last night, and rode it thru Skyline Drive last week. It's been race crashed a couple times when i was a lowly Cat 5 a zillion years ago, but still intact and no problems at all with it.

Just check it out like anyother used purchase. If it's fine, buy it. The frame is a good starting point for a decent bike. If it has the original aluminum fork, I'd upgrade that right away.

Is it just me....I could have sworn the 2100 was an aluminum frame?

Thinking the same thing; don't recall any Trek 2100 with anything but a carbon fork. (and maybe seat stays?)

How old is this bike? I haven't seen RX100 components in many years. If the bike has a 7 speed drivetrain, upgrades may be complicated. And of course, condition has a huge impact on used bike prices, especially for carbon frames.

That has been true since the Trek 5000 series appeared in the late 1990s. The bike in question must be from the early 1990s or late 1980s.

Bikes: Look 565, Trek 2120

$450 is way high. I have a 2120, a similar bike from the same period (early-mid 90s) and I sure wish it was worth that much

These were not full carbon frames, the three main tubes are carbon bonded to aluminium rear triange and fork. A good bike, but FWIW, another BF member picked one up for $50 some months ago in a yard sale .

Go point. That's why i still have mine. It's not worth it to sell it. It's still a nice ride, so its my beater.

I found it no small irony that the new iteration of the 2100 frameset is a complete reverse of what it used to be. Instead of carbon main triangle and aluminum rear, its now an aluminum main triangle with a carbon rear.
