Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm not into judging others quite as quickly as most of the BFers in this thread. I think looking at it from the other angle might be appropriate for them. What if he hadn't spit on the guy? The driver would've respected roadies for all their good manners and professional demeanor, realized he did wrong, and from then on start giving cyclists the full lane that we deserve?

To them I only have this to say: FAIL!

Do you have time to spend in the hospital? This is a possible outcome when he decides to kick the retaliation up another notch as a result of your actions. A smile, and perhaps a silent laugh, would have been just as humiliating. It also would have been nice to find some way to talk to the officers.

Are you 10 years old or do you just act like it? I'm hard pressed to imagine a more immature thing to do.

If he hadn't spit? ...Exactly. Not spitting wouldn't have changed anything for the driver and spitting only serves to make him angrier. It's a stupid idea any way you slice it. You aren't going to change any motorist based on any interaction, whether it's 2 seconds (giving him the finger) or 30 seconds (yelling or talking in a civil manner) worth of any type of interaction, so it's best to just let it go. It's likely the only way you won't make the situation worse.

I was in a similar situation one time. As I passed the offender I shouted HA HA at the top of my lungs as I pointed my finger and taunted him. It made me feel good. The cop just shook his head. I know it wasn't very Christian of me, but it seemed like the right thing to do at the time.

It is escalating a problem, not solving a f'ing thing. The driver is not going to 'think twice' about messing with a cyclist next time. He is going to hate cyclists more. Spitting in this case did not do a single thing to make up for the guy driving so close. It did not undo that action, did it? And it most likely made it less safe for other riders on these roads.

The title of this thread and the memory of the yell thread did make me smile a bunch today. I too loved that thread.

Situations like this are exactly why you should fill one of your water bottles up with pee before every ride.

Sometimes a man needs to let loose. In this case it was spitting which is quite funny. While other people are content with the phrase 'let the law take care of him', other people would rather taste the sweetness of subtle revenge. I think it's great you snuck in a little cheap shot on the b-tard.

I can't believe these absurd views of some people--i simply just don't agree with it. "spitting was uncalled for"???? Bah, that's BS. Before all of this politically correct BS and threats of suing for assault came around, a bar fight was simply a man to man thing to resolve a dispute. Now any form of retalitation is frowned upon. What crap!!

It's not about PC, it's about self-preservation. In the future confrontations that this senseless action probably will create, the person on the bike, whoever it is, will be the loser. It's extremely hard to see ANY humor in creating yet more hostility against cyclists.

Thanks to all for the support! and the critics as well, this is a good discussion.

I'm not 10, but I do act like it, I AM actually part Basque and I don't really like cops... unless of course I need one. I always tell me buddies I ride with not to give the finger, or provoke situations becuase we are vulnerable, but for some reason, it just kinda all fell into place that day, and It is what it is..

I wanted to take my helmet off and swing it around like a war hammer and hit him in the face with it, but I wasn't wearing one.. so let's start judging me for:

a. homicidal medieval thoughts

b. suicidal medieval actions

Basic thread describing a normal situation encountered while riding followed up with an internal feeling/reaction that will split the crowd 50/50, topped off with an external action that is extreme enough to foster arguement over - thus eclipsing the entire beginning of the story and focusing the discussion solely on reactions to that last act.

Spitting on someone - no matter how wrong they are...
Pulling somone out of a paceline by their jersey - no matter how wrong they are....

I see it. Both are classic.

The title helped too.

Where is a cream pie when you really need one?

If you really wanted to embarrass the guy, you could have pantsed him while both officers were distracted elsewhere, then say "Ha ha." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...ranks#Pantsing
