Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

7 speed bar end shifter for 6 speed freewheel?

I've got a Wolber Super Alpine laced to a shimano 600 hub with a 6 speed freewheel on it (i think 14-32) that I took off of the centurion I converted. The wheel is in great condition. I also have the Shimano 600 6 speed der. I have a fantasy of building up a steel Coffee/grocery/commuter bike with a 1 x 6 drive train (and some classy fenders and racks).

6 speed bar end shifters don't seem to exist. Could a 7 speed friction shifter work? Would it need adjustment or because it's friction shifting could I just use it as is and not shift all the way?

Maybe this is more appropriate for the C and V forum, but this seemed like a decent place to start.

Thanks.

Do friction shifters have "speeds"? It should work with any derailleur and freewheel.

Friction shifters do not have speeds. You might have problems going with more cassette gears than shifter gears, but you won't have a problem the other way around. Just make sure your derailler stops are set appropriately.

Yup. You'll be fine. You can do this with indexed shifters too - the limit screws will just prevent it from pulling into that last (non existent on the cassette) gear.

(or can you fit a seventh cog onto the freewheel?)
