Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Wal-Mart Bikes?!

Looks like wally world is taking a little more serious approach to cycling. Just got a email about a few "new" rides they are carrying, from aluminum to full carbon with pretty decent components as well. Wonder how well they will do with these? Any ideas on the frames "origin"?

I like how they are still in the "toy" section.

I heard they have carbon plated aluminum frames as well... Am I the only one that thinks that is pointless.

There isn't much of a selection in sizes as well.

I think if I was going to spend that much I'd rather see it go to my local bike shop. At least there I can get a decent fitting, service, a free tune up after the break in.

What they really need is to buy up some discontinued brand names with more presitge - like Sannino, Legnano, and Medici, sell them from a dedicated web site listing ridiculous MSRP's, then hire some shill with 50 login names to spam the forums with "reviews", links, and group buy solicitations.

It's like the people who say they drive a Ferrari but they really have a cheap Fiero with a crappy body kit on it! ROFL

Very true but not everyone has a LBS and this allows others to get into cycling if nothing else! I am by no means promoting them but with all of the "crap" road bikes they have been putting out it was a surprise to see something "better".

Diablo, I honestly thought the same thing as I read the description of them but decided not to post those thoughts!

i think it'd be very odd to have Wal-mart as your local bike shop. Would you bring it there to get serviced? i suppose you could, and shop for a 90-pack of socks while you wait.

They need to knock the price down to about 1100 bucks. They can do it, it's Wal Mart for Christ sake.

I wouldn't spend a dollar at walmart if the bike was 50 bucks. Eff 'em.

Seriously though I am going to hop on the Motobecane bandwagon and get the phantom Cross pro when they have them in stock again.

I like how they have a $1,900 dollar bike and suggest that you also buy a $17 helmet

If I spent 4K on a bike I'd only have $25 left for a helmet too!! LOL

Walmart Bikes fill a niche. It may not be a niche that fits 80% or more of us here, but it still fills a niche none the less.

I think it's OK too

Still very happy with my Chinese "Schwinn" from Target after three years. The quality is as good as more expensive bikes in the places that count, and IMO it's a better "Schwinn" than anything produced outside the Paramount shop.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say Taiwan or possibly China.

You realize that for $100 more you could buy a Trek Madone 5.2 with full Ultegra from a real bike store right?
