Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How long will pedals last?

I tried to do a search on this one but came up empty...

I've got Speedplay froggies on my roadie. Even though I've replaced the cleats, I still have sloppiness in the connection from the shoe. I spoke with Speedplay and they suggested replacing the pedal or getting a kit to overhaul them.

I've got 3 years, 8,000 miles on them. Does this sound about right?

Yep, sounds about right. However, even brand new Speedplays have play in them.

How much float do you have on your speedplay's? I know it's a condescending idea, but maybe it's just the float?

Tons of float, but that is not the issue. I am experiencing a weak connection between the cleats and the pedals themselves. The limit screw is not effective as a solution.

Wow. I have a pair of SPD pedals from 1993 on my beater bike. Easily 50,000 mlies on them. Zero maintenance so far! They still work great. Until I saw this post, I didn't think it was possible to wear out pedals.

bebop pedals, by design, last forever.

their cleats also last "virtually" forever (as in, they don't need to be replaced nearly as often as any other cleat system, and you can walk on them)

(and the pedals can be rebuilt, if for some reason aliens have landed, pigs are flying, the US has stopped the occupation of ALL foreign countries, and RyanF wins the TourDeFrance... but if you really, really, need to at that point, which would be even more rare)

My speedplay x pedals lasted 13 years without a problem, until they finally binded up and died on me last year. So I picked up another pair and never skipped a beat.

Thirteen years is a long time for any mechanical part on a bike to last, IMO.

For what it's worth, I took the bike and shoes to the LBS today.

First, we replaced the cleats and checked the snuggness against the pedal. While improved, it was still not the best. We discovered that one side of the left pedal (the Froggies are double sided entry) was looser than the other when clipped in. We then changed out the pedal and found everything to be working properly.

So, whatever the reason, I did have a pedal with an issue. Speedplay does offer a kit to refurbish the pedal body however as I have a Century coming up this weekend, time was short.
