Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Thinking about a new Specialized Allez Comp

Hi everyone, just starting to get back into road biking and new to these forums. I'm thinking about getting a new 06 Specialized Alllez Comp that a local shop is selling for $1000. From looking around online and locally, that seems like a pretty decent deal, what do you guys think? The frame is only a 52 (probably why it's still around and marked down), so I'm a little skeptical about getting such a small frame, but I'm only 5'6" Tall. The guy at the store thinks it fits me fine, but he want the commission on the bike too I'm sure. On a 54cm, I have to keep the seatpost that it comes with all the way down to fit (has to be a few inches up to clear the zertz in the post). So what do you guys think about this bike. Has just about everything I was looking for as far as frame, components, wheels, etc.

You can get all the specs on the specialized website, but basically its:
Alum frame w/ carbon seatstays and fork, Zertz inserts
All Shimano 105, 10spd components
Mavic Aksium Wheelset

Thanks for your opinions, this site is great, can't wait to participate more.

-Eric

I think you can get new 08 Allez's for that price or very close. Why bother with the 06? That way you can make sure it's fitted to you too. That alone might be worth the extra 100-200 bucks if the 08's are more than a grand. I doubt they are though since the MSRP on an 08 is still only $1200.

The only 08 pricing I have seen so far has been up to the Elite, which is spec'd below the Comp, and MSRP is $1200. For 07 the Comp MSRP was $1600 and appears to be spec'd the same as the 06. I would say $600 off is a pretty good deal but it wouldn't hurt to try and get more, either in price off the bike or accessories.

As far as fit that will be something you have to determine. For reference though I am 6' and ride a 56cm Roubaix Pro. I wouldn't think the 52 would be too small for you but only you can really figure that out.

You may also be able to have them order a 07, should be able to cut you a deal on it as well if they can get one, in a 54 if thats what you need. Good luck!!!

I have an 06 comp and really like it. I just got it in january and it is my first bike. So far I have put 3,000 miles on it and enjoy the bike. I did change the crank, derailers, cassette, and chain out for dura ace though. I paid 800 for mine new off ebay.

Thanks for the info guys. They have 1700 marked as original, even though no one probably sells it for that anyway. They have 07 Allez Elite's for 900 bucks, about the same frame, but cheaper wheels (don't recall the brand) and mostly tiagra components.

54 is too big. Especially if the seatpost is that low. The LBS is right get the 52.

I just purchased an 07' Allez Comp for $1100, so I think you may be able to get an '06 Allez Comp for a bit cheaper. It certainly couldn't hurt to ask for a better deal.

As far as fit - I agree that the 52 is the right size for you. I'm 5'9" with a 30" inseam and my Allez Comp is a 54" and fits like a glove, so I would think the 52 is perfect for you at 5'6".

To be the third person in this thread to contribute this, I'm 5'6" and ride a Specialized as well. 52 cm is perfect.

I just recently purchased an 08 Allez Comp for my first road bike. I bought shoes, a helmet and speedplay pedals. When i was writing the check out, I asked how much the total was and he told me 1100 dollars.. I was like holy sh*t i think they made a mistake but didn't say anything... And when i went home sure enough they only charged me $800 dollars for the 1200 dollar bike.... I looked at all the components and sure enough i got the 1200 dollar bike for 800... I kinda felt bad but oh well its not my mistake... Anyways the bike is bad ass.. I really enjoy it..

the 06' is full 105 including the brakes. The newer Comps have cheaper brakes. Just FYI.

Well I put the bike on layaway, so I have a few months to look around, but it seems like a pretty decent deal. The guy who was there tonight was much more helpful, and proved to me that this size was correct, and fit the bike to me. Wouldn't budge on the price, but said he would throw in some accessories when I come to pick it up.

Brian,
I noticed that too, they wanted another 250 bucks for the 07. I didn't see enough to justify the extra cash.
