Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I have run Cinelli Cork for years but believe the new synthetics are much more durable and have improved shock absorbing quality. Cork seems to have the best absorbency therefore less prone to slippage when riding in high heat...I don't wear gloves except in cold weather.

For those that have tried both Fizik Microtex and Deda handlebar tape, which do you prefer and why? I have had good luck with Deda tape...have Deda carbon black on my current road bike...durable...a little slippery when wet but tacky when dry....not really cushy by any means but better shock absorption then cork tape.

Any Fizik Microtex lovers out there and do you prefer it to the Deda tape if you have tried both? Any other good bar tapes to consider?
Thanks.

The thin Fizik stuff looks nice, for one, and keeps pretty clean (more so than cork and even in white). Because it is thin, it doesn't do much for damping or ride quality. However, personally, I like to feel my bar and not as if I'm gripping the top part of a baseball bat. Slick, at worst, when wet (can vouch from my ride this morning in the rain) but ride the hoods or the drops and it isn't a problem.

If you want something with more give to it, you will need to wear gloves or swap to cork, however.

James, do you think that Cinelli cork has more cushion then Fizik Microtex?
Thanks.

It's just bar tape. It costs like $20.00 retail absolute max. Insted of asking a bunch of people that you don't know, why don't you just buy whatever strikes your fancy, try it out, and decide for yourself? If you decide that you don't like it for any reason, try something else.

Certainly a little bit at least, but yeah it does. It is thicker and therefore has some more substance. In addition, it is fairly soft. Should suit you fine if you just pull the trigger on it.

But yeah, head over the LBS and have a feel of the different types if you even care to bother. You will get a pretty good sense of what you're dealing with. Worst case, you change it out as stated.

RG...its just a bicycle. Why don't you go play in traffic...preferably in very busy traffic.

The reason I asked is the fizik tape seems to be promoted as more of a system of over and underwrap. Many purchase the underwrap which has most of the cushioning quality and the tape itself I now understand is quite thin. Many tapes like Deda have a microcell foam which is injection molded to the outer skin, the net result being not quite as cushy but likely more so then just the Fizik tape with no underwrap.
Thanks for your comments.

Microtex is very thin. Next to no padding. But it's designed for this. I like the feel of very thin gloves and microtex. The suede stuff is very grippy. If your gloves aren't tight there is potential for blisters becuase your glove will stick, but your hand won't. The rest, not so much so, but still great, except when wet.
