Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Performance Ultra Bibs for $44

I just picked up 2 pair, since they are 50% off. How's that for rampant consumerism?

Sorry if this thread looks like a Performance ad, just wanted to point people to the good deal if you like these bibs, as I do.

These are awesome bibs! I also own two pairs. I've had them for about 6 months, I wear them every day, and they've held up pretty well. The stitching was coming undone on one of them but I sewed that back up in no time flat.

The pad in my ultra shorts isn't square - that is too say it pushes the junk off to one side out of the chamios. good for abt an hour, and then really, really, really painful. I think it's just my short though. Other people seem to have had better luck.

Yes the Ultras are tighter due to their "Muscle compression" fabic. The Elites generally fit bigger builds better.

that is a great price. I had one pair of Ultras that I 'lost' doing laundry somehow.

They are good - I too have two pair.

BTW, is this a typical Performance pattern? They send email about sales, which keep getting better and better. I finally jumped at the second pair because I thought it was too good to pass up. The next day I get another "more off" mail.

I have been using these for the last two seasons, jumped on two more pairs, $44 @ minus current 10% off and free shipping for Team members. Too good a deal to pass up.

There's a link to the bibs in case anyone is like me and (just almost) too lazy to go see them for yourself.

I am by no means a "bigger build" at 6' and 165lbs. I wear a medium in the Elites so would that put me in a large in the Ultras? Two for one and 10% off is pretty hard to beat...

You would probably wear the same size in the Ultras as well. The Ultras just fit your body a tad tighter due to the different material.

Thanks! Although my Elites fit pretty tight as is, of course they are two years old now too. But according to Performances sizing charts I don't even come close to a large, waist wise anyway. I am a 33 there so that puts me right in the M size.

I asked about the tightness because I'm short and very stocky. I wear large Elites and once bought Ultras online that I couldn't even get past my knees. I could hear seams ripping. I later got another pair of large that I 'thought' were Ultra but looked different. They fit but still tighter than Elites.

I don't want to go XL because they'd come down to my knees. Perf is listing the Ultra inseams as 10" versus 8" Elites so there's my answer.

Don't forget to apply this for another 10% off - 6001782

af2nr - I've worn the Ultras for 2 years now. 6', 175, 33" waist - L fist perfect. I think the M would be too tight for me - and - from the sound of it - you.

mashoff, Thanks! That was what I was thinking just from the fit of my Elites but wasn't sure how the Ultras would fit. I know with bibs the overall fit can even be tighter due to the straps and such. Again thanks!

On a side note are the Ultra bibs worth the $10 extra over the Elite bibs, comparing the two? I think the only downside I can see with this order is the $10.25 shipping Performance charges. That seems outrageous for two pair of bibs...

How do these compare to the Voler bibs from Hammer?

I have both and I currently prefer the Ultras. The material on the Voler boibs is nice, but nothing beats the Ultra's chamois.

Ultras are Euro sizing - it's more than just the compression design. This changed for them 2 seasons ago.

I currently have 6(?) pairs of Ultras at home that I used to use for every ride. Now I mix it up a bit. Ultras still are pretty much the best chamois of the bunch though.

On the chamois alone it, for me, ranks right next to my Assos. The Assos are better deisgned, better material, will last longer, etc., but for the money the Ultra is an extremely good short.

Wo0t! Just ordered two more sets. They're not perfect but they're well worth the dough, especially at this price.

Edit: another sizing data point for you all: 6', 190lbs, 35"-36" waist, and *XL* is a little tight to get on, but rides fine.

I ordered two Elites; now I'll gradually replace these with Assos or Pearl Izumis.

SOLD! I just ordered two sets due to price and your input on the chamois. I like my Elite shorts but the chamois seems a little more bulky than my Volers, which I like. Partly cause they are my only bibs and partly because the chamois is comfortable...

The elites are good shorts, although the stitching can be spotty in my experience. My chamois is separating from the short and my first pair had a big hole along one of the seams, but the shorts are so well priced that these issues didn't make me hesitate to buy another pair of elites and try a pair of ultras.

Steve, your muscular build is so much different than the typical "Roadie". My build is much different than the typical as well and I know how hard it is to find clothes, let alone cycling appearal that fits. It's a pain in the butt. I usually have to go up in waist size to get jeans to fit my quads.

I actually bought all three Performance bibs once (Century, Elite and Ultra). While they all fit, I found for me the Elites fit better and I actually liked the chamois in the Elites more than the Ultra.

There have actually been at least a couple different iterations of the Ultra over the past few years. I'm not sure what, but they did make some changes to the sizing and maybe the lengths.

Thanks for the post. I really like these, and just ordered my 4th.
I like the good-deal Voler bibs from Hammer a lot too. They feel very different, but I'm not sure which I like more (for feel, I'm not nuts about HAMMER on my leg)
The Ultras are so skin hugging they don't move on my body, so nothing rubs. They're a second skin, but don't bind or feel too tight. The Hammers have a nice feel, more substantial, equally nice, but different.
