Lots Of Miles Help
I had a great week last week. A friend from California flew to Wisconsin and we rode in and around Door County. We were rained out two days but still managed to get in over 400 miles on the bikes.
Two years ago I started riding again after a 20 year lay off. It's cold in Wisconsin for half of the year so I thought getting 1000 miles in was a big deal. But this year I had in over 2000 miles before we started this trip. Door County is beautiful and the back roads are devoid of traffic. I thought I was in pretty good shape before the trip but it's amazing how much better you can get quickly when you really put on the miles.
I have a 40 mile ride I usually do on weekends in my home town in MIlwaukee. My average speed while riding alone is 15 to 16 miles per hour while trying to avoid hills however after my 400 mile week on the same route I averaged 17 to 18 miles per hour and was actively searching for hills.
This bike riding is great stuff! I'm 48 and my body is still responding to the challenge.

Ill have to give Door County a try. Ive had a great time this season with commuting here in Madison, great paths all the way to my work. I ride around lake Monona on the weekends for fun with my wife. Any tips for areas in Door County to ride?

The road along the bay from Sturgen Bay through Fish Creek, Egg Harbor and beyond is great. Washington Island is also fun. Take your bike over on the ferry. The roads on the Island are great and there is very little traffic.
