Saddle positioning...

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Saddle positioning...

I find myself riding more up on the nose of my saddle.

Exactly how far back should I be riding on the saddle?

I got out today for the first time in a while because of a knee problem. I don't know if its because I hadn't rode in a while or what, but I was very conscience that I was riding up on the nose. I'd make myself ride back on the saddle, then before I knew it, I was right back up on the nose. I tried moving forward and back, to find a comfortable place on the saddle, but then I had to stretch out for the handlebars.

Any advice???

Thanks,

Ray

Presumably the nose.

Sounds like maybe it's not where you are on the saddle, but where you are with respect to the pedals that is putting you on the nose. Any chance the saddle has moved?

I guess its possible, I don't know if I could tell unless there might be a scratch on the rails. I'll look and find out for sure.

Thanks,

Ray

You sit bones should be on the widest part of the saddle (the rear.) If you find yourself migrating forward during the course of pedalling, you may have the saddle too far back.

Or your saddle is tilted too far nose down.

sometimes when i am in the drops and spinning down longer declines, i find myself inching up on the saddle. for some reason it feels better. when climbing, i'll cheat back. for what i spent, i guess i want to use all of it.

your saddle's too far back, move it forward...

the same exact thing happened to me, and moving it forward helped...

keep in mind that may require you to switch to a longer stem. if you move your saddle forward 10mm, you need to increase your reach 10mm too, and they only way you can do that is with a longer stem...

Thanks for all the input. I'm gonna try moving it forward 1/2 inch or so.

However the OP may be moving forward while pedalling because the saddle-to-bar reach was too long to start with. I experienced a similar effect with a frame which was too large for me.

+1 on checking your saddle tilt...if it's slightly down and your seat is a bit to far back...you will constantly be sliding forward....don't ask me how I know

You also may want to try to get fitted on your bike. The position forward/back that the saddle is in respects to your pedal has dramatic improvements/disadvantages if it is the proper location. You can also create knee problems if it's not in the rigth location. Read into it or check a local shop.

I know when my saddle was out of place on my old bike I continuely keep pushing myslef off the back of the seat.

Good luck.

true, but it's not a new bike, and i'm guessing if it was a reach issue that he would have noticed it a while ago. while you may be right, a shorter stem isn't always the answer, and sometimes makes a problem worse...

If you have had a lay-off from the bike for a while, what might seem like "stretching" to reach the handlebars right now might not really be too long. I always find that after some time off the bike, it takes a few days of riding for the muscles to re-adapt. For the same reason, your saddle might be Ok, but your leg muscles might need to stretch again. So you unconsciously compensate by riding more forward on the saddle (which has the effect of making your saddle height effectively lower).
