Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

waterford r33

anyone got one? got any photos? looking for a classic steel frame, heard the r33 is great (and light, ~17lbs full bike?), but hard to find reviews...

they're expensive i know ($2000), but i reckon that's a bike you keep a long time - damn fine lines too...

I've had 2 of them!

The first was the first ever RS33 in a modified road sport geo. I loved the way it rode, but had some minor aesthetic issues with longer chainstays-strictly vanity!

The second is a race frame, but with an 80mm BB drop for stability and lower center of gravity. I have yet to strike a pedal with the lower BB.

Both bikes started out with CF forks-an Alpha Q on the first and an Ouzo Pro (painted to match). However, my current R33 has a Waterford steel fork these days. It's beautiful strong and has a much nicer ride than the CF forks because it's designed around the properties of the frame, not for all possible contingencies.

It weighs 17.2 with the steel fork. Closer to 16 with the CF. I can't tell a difference in the speed of the bike between forks, but the ride is wonderful with the steel.

The guys at the shop (that I own) call it the Magic Carpet.

If you join RoadBikeRider.com, Fred Matheny has a detailed product review based upon 300 hours of riding his new personal bike, a custom R-33.

I think if you type Waterford or steel into the search engine you will probably find a lot of threads with steel bike pictures that include Waterfords.
