Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

what to eat before a century?

I enjoy doing century rides and most are out of town requiring me to stay overnight @ a hotel. I have a hard time w/ breakfast right after I wake up but know that I should eat something before I ride. What do you eat before an early AM century?

Actually, nothing. Just eat a couple pounds of plain spaghetti the night before. In the morning, carry some energy food & drink with you on the ride and eat & drink as you ride. That's what I do...

Ya know what is kinda funny...I've found before I plan on going for a long ride a box of KD really gives me a good gas tank full of carbs for the next morning. (Some of you probably want to puke right now, but thats ok!) Seriously though. Pasta is great stuff, as long as you plan on burning off those slow carbs. Otherwise, whatever you body does't use all sits on your waistline.

This months Bicycling Magazine states that up to 50% of your glycogen stores are depleted over night. I found that for myself personally, I really benefit from Quaker Oats. I eat almost a full cup of them. 1 serving is 1/2 cup, but a full cup may be what you need.

I agree with Sebring...
If I'm doing a long ride, I start the day off with an large bowl of Oatmeal, raisins, milk and a little sugar. It's the first thing I do, so by the time I get out riding, It's not a lump in my gut. Normally, I'm not a breakfast fan, but when I ride, I need that to get me through till snack time and lunch.

I also pig on some pasta the night before - so it sounds like I'm covering my bases...

I forgot to mention that I also hydrate like mad the day before I know I'm going on a long ride. I find this helps too.

A century is just another ride. I do at least a half dozen every season and two 75-85 mile rides every week. I have my normal breakfast.

I read an article on Tyler Hamilton, his recomendation was eat before a ride - anything is better than nothing, but he does the grain cereal / bannana / juice. My problem is that I do not eat breakfast normally.

stiffee_shane,
What in the world is KD? (Krispy Kreme Donuts**********???)

What to eat: from prior posts different people obviously have different requirements. What works for Tyler whose caloric requirements are probably 2-3x the rest of us and whose metabolism is finely honed to the demands of 1-3wk stage racing has little relevence. Century rides will deplete muscle glycogen stores long before the end: for most riders 40-60mi will completely deplete. If you ride a century nonstop you will need a full set of stores of glycogen and a fairly full stomach, not so full as to inhibit breathing but filled say an hour in advance of the start. You will need to start eating on the run at 20-30 miles and more or less continuously thereafter to replenish energy stores. If you are stopping at each rest stop and chowing down then a more leisurely approach to refueling is possible. By the 50mi mark serious and ongoing refueling is needed to prevent bonking. A few riders that find 150 to 200mi on the bike is a nice days ride may differ but most of us don't fall into this category.
