Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bruising after a ride

I've noticed over the last week or so, I've developed bruises on the top of my legs (quads). I haven't hit or bumped my legs at all. It happend after my second 160km ride in the same week. Has anyone else experienced this? I've taken two full rest days and I have one more planned rest day tomorrow. It seems to be helping. My appetite is huge. I seem to eat all day.

Funny you should mention that, I have the same phenomenon on the tops of my legs at the front just above the knee, I haven't banged them but I have cycled a lot more this last week than I ever have...

On long rides, I sometimes get hives on my lower quads. It never happens under my shorts, but I've heard of some people experiencing that as some sort of allergy to material near the hems or grippers in hot weather. The next day, they'll turn more purple. It's like a photosensitive reaction followed by post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (or so my dad, a doc, says). It could look sort of like bruising. Do you see something like this or are they real, sore bruises? Some people I've talked to treat it with hydrocortisone. For me, the only thing that works is benadryl cream.

I've gotten bruising on the muscles on the back of my knee when I was riding with my seat too high. I think it has to do with overextending a tight muscle and causing microtears and slight buising.

This reminds me that on the off season, I need to work on my hamstring flexibility.

I rode for 7 days straight, 320 miles, till labor day.. took 4 days rest and went out saturday morning and could not put pressure on any incline.. noticed a light bruise just above my right knee and slightly to the inside... felt like a pulled muscle.. but I didn't do anything to injure it.... I did feel some burning in the thighs during some of the rides last week, but that's normal when doing hard rides.

All I can think of is that I might of gotten some micro tears in the muscles that didn't bother me until I rode an incline..

I iced it all day saturday and skipped riding today... will give it a few days and see what happens..
