Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New Rider

I am looking to start biking to complement my crew workouts for college rowing, but am completely lost when it comes to bikes (used to just buy huffy's and walmart bikes when I was a kid). I'm looking to drop maybe $200-$500 on a new/used bike so any recommendations are greatly appreciated. Looking forward to hearing some sound advice.

If you go used, you will have enough left over for shoes/pump/supplies.

OP - Used makes sense with that budget. Bikes drop quickly in market value when they reach the used market. That said, it's tough to make a recommendation because used bikes will be all over the map in terms of quality, condition, size, age, etc. You should be able to pick up a 3-5 year old mid-range Trek (1000/1200/1500) for that kind of money. Aluminum frames are generally the cheapest/best bang-for-buck when it comes to rigidity and weight. Getting the right size frame is essential; structural integrity is too. Beyond that, virtually every component on a bike can be repaired or replaced.

Keep some bucks for the essential extras: spare tube/tool kit, shoes, helmet, floor pump, bike shorts, jersey, etc.

Any road bike will be fine for your size. Be sure to test ride them to make sure they fit and are comfortable to ride.

There's a top female rower here that cycles a lot. She's fast!
