Four words - strength to weight ratio. Anything that adds mass without adding sport specific strength just makes you work harder. I ride 150-200 miles a week, run 20, swim around 5000 meters, and spend about 10 hours a week rock climbing and my calves are tiny. Sometimes I wonder if I ever use them at all they are so small. That doesn't give me the greatest appearance but I'd rather go fast and climb hard than look good. But then again I'm married so what do I know.

You run your calf a mile a day.
You start by telling the calf "run a mile".
If the calf does not run the mile,
STOP THE LESSON
and pour yourself an ice-cold glass of Mug root beer.
