Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I've had my $30 Cateye computer with candence for about 6 months. I have ridden it through torrential downpours, baking sun, dropped the head a few times (once while moving). Build well, although the wires can get somewhat harry. I wouldn't spend more than $60 on a computer. I use all the features on my computer, but I don't find myself wishing for anything else.

The wireless computers these days are much better than they used to be. Pretty bulletproof.

I like wired better - smaller, lighter, only one battery, simpler.

Sigmas and Cateyes seem to be most popular basic computers. I like Sigmas because the numbers are big.

I use both. If you're a big spender and can afford the extra $5.00 per year on another battery, go wireless.

I have a Catey Astrale 8 that is wired on one bike and have had zero issue in 3 years. Have a Sigma 1606L wireless on my new bike for 3 month and had a too many signal error one time while wearing my heart rate monitor, they usually works perfect and it was extremely easy to set up. If I where to buy a new one I would buy a another Sigma.

Cateye Astrale 8. Wired. Good, cheap, and reliable.

I have a VDO computer. It's not bad, as such, but every time I drop it, it reverts back to zero. I.e., I lose all of my data.

This irritates me so much that I am going to replace it.

It is wired. (I like the lighter weight, less obtrusive stuff.) My wired Cateye has been very reliable.

Wireless is cleaner looking. Spend the coin and get one with heart rate (if you are competing or plan to).

I use ciclosport. Stick with a name brand: Ciclosport, Cateye, Sigma - all reliable.

Avoid Echowell or any computer that seems to be a REALLY good deal. Lots of useful features, reliable and cheap. Pick any two.

I was thinking the exact same thing.

I went wireless just to get rid of the clutter and the sensor size is about the same.

I have a wireless 'puter on the mountain bike, but wired on the road bikes.

Of course, I've spent more time this summer on the fixed gear, which has no computer at all. I'm kind of enjoying the simplicity right now.

Any opinions on Polar computers? I've been thinking about getting one with a HRM and cadence.

I use all Cateye, both wired and wireless, work great! I've had some problems with Vetta computers in the past. My wife still uses a 10+ yr old Trek computer.

Wireless Cateye Strada. Very accurate although I notice a delay in my speedometer on quick accelerations. That doesn't bother me, though, and my average speed reads the same as those with wired computers on group rides.

Thanks everyone. I went with the Sigma BC1106 wired. I got it for $13 at Jenson. Couldn't beat the price.
