Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Just broke an eggbeater. anyone else?

I was leisurely riding to the mailbox with regular shoes on and heard
a sound of a piece of small metal hitting the ground. Turns out
it was one of the loop pieces of the pedal body completely broke off.

They have a 2yr warrantee, so now the search begins for the receipt.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Eggbeaters are not designed to be ridden with street shoes. Warranty void.

Just kidding.

That sucks, my two pairs of eggbeaters and one set of candies seem to be all but bulletproof.

hate to bump such an old thread, but I just broke an eggbeater too.

I was halfway through a 50 mile ride, and looked down and saw one of the wings had broken off. I could still use the pedal's other side though for the ride home. Just saw they are pretty cheap on amazon.

I slam my Eggbeater SL on my MTB into roots, rocks, trees, etc a few times a ride. They don't seem to mind.

I've broken my Eggbeater SL's twice. The first time, the bearings worked loose, making the cleat engagement sloppy. Crank replaced those under warranty. A couple of years later, one of the springs failed and would no longer grip my cleats.

I think Crank has a simple, lightweight, inexpensive design, but their pedals are probably not as durable as other major brands.

The axles are different metals, but what about the springs and cages?

If you don't find the receipt, give them a call, Crank Bros is pretty generous when it comes to warranty and they may hook you up.

+1 to giving Crank Bros a call or email. They've been very nice to work with.

I've had two pedals go bad on me, one a Quattro and the other a Mallet. Both did the same thing -- the spring slipped out of the groove in the cage and the cage would stick open on two sides. The other two sides would still work, but naturally there's no way to guarantee that I'd clip into them.
