Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I ride solo 99.99% of the time. When I see someone on a bike ahead of me, I try to catch up. When and if I do, I try to ride with them for a bit and see if they are interested in riding together. Most of the time, I end up just going by with a "have a nice ride".

If someone passes me, I might chase if I didn't know they were coming up and I was taking it easy. If they are obviously faster, I don't bother. Most of time, I give chase but chances are if they passed me, that's the end of the story.

None of this is racing, it just makes the ride a bit more interesting.

Generally, the faster the rider, the less likely they are to engage in this kind of behavior. If you race or have a powermeter, you already have a good idea of where you stand and don't have to resort to sneak-racing total strangers.
haha no it was not. i was in socal all summer and that's where it happened alot. i do agree that the faster the rider the less likely this is to happen. last month of the summer my legs completely burnt out from over training and i started doing really slow and short recovery spins. in that month like magic, the amount of riders killing themselves to pass for that 5 minutes of victory tripled. good times =)

Interesting thing that you mention this.... But I think every person who behaves this way on their bike is taking the exact same mindset that you are. Strangely, if you were to see someone else doing this, your natural response is to call them something other/lesser than yourself and assume that they're trying to be the next Lance etc.

I think it's a difference of what you're trying to get out of cycling. Different people do it for different reasons. Some to race (competition), so they get a license and give it a go. Some for recreation and they build their lives around the sport as a way to stay in shape etc. The complaint you'll get around these parts (BF) is when someone who has the racing spirit spends his energy racing recreational or training riders because they don't have the b*lls (or funds) to race. In this case, it's the behavior that's annoying, not the mindset, as nobody ever gets to see what you're thinking. I'm still not convinved that you're not trolling, as there have been multiple posts much less blatant than yours that have been flamed up even since I've been around, and that's not too long. But if you truly are genuine, then you should rethink your priorities and channel your interests/energy into either racing, or finding a group that will challenge you on longer rides. Any Fred (even myself) can sprint for short distances...and believe it or not your "turn before they can see me hurting" approach was seen through the moment you went by them...each and every one of them. And now you've labeled yourself as the local idiot on the bike.

So, all you guys and maybe gals who are poo pooing the OP were never JRA with a buddy and after spotting another rider ahead, said "let's reel him in"?

just be aware that if you see a 'racer-looking' dude who's going very slow, he could be:

1) on his easy day
2) near the end of his 250km ride
3) injured or ill
4) riding a busted bike
5) just wanting to get rid of you

I caught up to him near the foot of a .25 mile 5% climb. As I rode ahead of him and noticed the color of his helmet straps and I was determined to teach him a lesson. We both approached to the foot of the climb and I was determined not to change gear. I have my power output set to 400w. roughly 19 mph. I glanced back at him and to initiate the challenge. He took the bait. He was slowly closing in to my wheel. I stood up and dropped down to my 13th gear and just blasted it up at 19 mph. Unless he has been racing, there is no way he could match my speed.

Leave him the H alone.

They grunt and, closest I can describe it, 'roar', but I can't imitate it and nobody would get it if I could, so moo it is. Comic license, sue me.

It's a sad day when the trash talkers enter cycling. Can't we have a sport where verbal one upmanship and showing off is not the norm? It's the humble guys who just do their job that are the best. Uggggghhhh.
