Picking a handlebar - what should I consider?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

don't get the anatomic/ergonomic/whatever bars. get some deda's, either the italian (shallow) or belgian (deep) drop. get either the deda newton (31.8) or the deda 215 (28.0)

the nitto stuff is excellent, but they've got several different bend and ramp styles to choose from, so know what you're getting. also, the nitto stuff will only work with a 28.0 clamp stem, and you won't have cable grooves. this may or may not be an issue for you, but they're excellent bars nonetheless.

oval concepts makes some nice 'classic bend' bars as well. go with your first instinct and stay away from the ergo/anatomic bars. also stay away from any $500 one-piece bar stem combo with a leopard airbrushed on it. like a bad tattoo, and you can't change it or move it.

good luck

I paid about $90 for the deda newton bars and I think the oval concepts stuff is a tad less. good luck.

After riding my friends cannondale, i fell in love with the Controltech bars that come stock. That flat edge made such a difference in comfort for me. The controltech formidable runs about $140. The 'comp' version i'm sure is much more expensive. Maybe one could be bought on e-bay within your price range.
