Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

^ A beauty, right? The canti-brake version is 1.2 lbs lighter than my bike all else equal. I weighed them at the shop. I decided on the disc version because I am frequently in the mud and rain and the superior braking is worth the weight penalty for me. Still mine is under 22 lbs so I'm not sad.

Like it, but like mentioned before I too seem to prefer the idea of canti's on a cross bike. If you never have any intention of racing it then by all means go disc, but until they make disc legal I just can't see getting one with disc.

Next purchase might actually be a cross bike. I love watching the races I have gone to the last couple of years and they are still un-popular enough that I could come in like, oh, 5-6th. It might be last, but it sounds like I did well.

disc brakes are only illegal in UCI races. bsically, international elite racers are the only ones who need to worry about that rule. most u.s. races are governed by uscf and they allow discs.

I don't think Portland even has any UCI races. Certainly none that pertain to my level of competition.

BAC -

That's a nice bike! Is that a carbon fork? I can't tell because it's painted.

Oh Salsa... how dare you taunt me so.

The over the top paint on the Salsa cross bike sis a great contrats to the stayed and classic look of the Lemonds. I can't decide which I like better. I'll take both, please.
