Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

If you don't mind some hills...

From Oakland get onto Redwood Rd. that goes south through the east bay hills. Eventually Redwood Rd. will dump you in Castro Valley. If you get south of 580 and then head east you can hook up with Palomares Rd going south. When Palomares ends at Niles Canyon (narrow and busy so be careful on Niles) you can go east to Calaveras Rd and take it south again. Calaveras ends in Milpitas which is most of the way to San Jose.
