Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Powertap Computer Compatibility

I've tried searching for this without any luck. I want to know whether Powertap head units are reverse compatible. Meaning, would the 2.4SL wireless computer work with the pro hub. Is there a compatibility chart somewhere with model years, etc?

I asked Saris that exact question about wireless working with the wired. I can't help you beyond this info.

hope this helps,
cdr

letter:

Hello,

The wireless hub is only compatible with the wireless CPU. They are not
backwards compatible.

I just called their customer service, they confirmed that the wired and wireless system are not compatible at all.

1) There are now 2 computers, a 2.4 wireless and a 2.4 wired.
2) 2.4 wireless is only compatible with the SL wireless hub.

It does. My dog broke my Head unit. The replacement Saris sold me is a 2.4 and it works fine with my wired SL. The only difference is I had to get a new heart rate strap that was coded.

There is a 2.4 wired, and a 2.4 wireless.

^ I'm not sure that's correct. My understanding is that the "2.4" refers to the 2.4 ghz transmission system. If it will receive a 2.4ghz signal from the coded heart rate strap, and from a wireless cadence sensor, I don't see why it wouldn't receive a wireless signal from a wireless hub.

When I asked Saris why they sent me a 2.4 head (that required a new coded strap) they told me they only make one head unit now.

^^^ The guy I talked to today mentioned that both head units use 2.4 for the coded heart rate, but there are two units when it comes to the hubs. He seems pretty sure, but I guess he could still be wrong.

Mine has 2.4 on the front and 'wired' on the side. I would doubt that it would work with the wireless hub if it says wired on it, and the emails/phone calls above tend to agree with that. But, since I haven't actually tried I'm not 100% sure.

I have/am selling a 2.4 wired. I don't know where the 2.4 came from but there are definitely wired and wireless versions of the head.

btw that email that I copy/pasted (without the guy's name) was sent to me from Saris on October 22 - in other words, about two weeks ago.
