Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Campy/SRAM RD compatibility?

I have a Campy Centaur group with a a 13-29 10 spd cassette that I'd like to lose the shifters on, because the thumb levers are injuring my hands on long rides, I'd like to get the SRAM Rival shifters to replace the Campy's, but I'm thinking I will then need to replace my RD as well. True?

If so, what would you do for an RD that's SRAM compatible that can handle a 29 large cog? Or am I better off getting a Dura Ace Shifter/RD combination? Thanks for any input!

I have over 1000 miles on a SRAM Rival set up with a Campy hub and 12-25 cassette.

As long as I set the Rd on the 4th cog of the cassette - the shifting is flawless.

i just figured it out, I think, normally the rd is set on the smallest cog, but to make it work correctly you set it on the fourt cog??
Am I right?
Sorry, I'm alittle slow tonight, contemplating proposing to my GF.

yes, set on 4th cog and it all works like a dream. ( 4th cog is Campy instructions by the way).

So, I can keep my campy cassette, but I need a SRAM derailleur, right?
Thanks, Eric

Probably not. The shifter is pulling the cable and telling the RD how far to throw.

I'd change the shifters and see how it works.

People get too worked up about groups and what not. The spacing is pretty close. Try the SRAM shifters with campy Rd and see how it goes.

Best of luck, I hope it goes well.
I have to do it the trad way and ask for her parents blessing first,
It was a choice of a Specialized or an engagement ring, I'm not as selfish as I thought.

Tell me about it. I was like you sure you don't want an engagement Specialized Ruby? I also get to stare at my pedal force RS that will now get 06 Campy Veloce instead of the Dura/Ace or Chorus or Force that I was planning originally. Sacrifices!

He most definitely needs a new derailer. It's not about spacing a campy derailer will move much more for a given cable pull then a sram one.

So nobody asks the real question? How do the thumb shifters actually injure your hands?

And try it first, sometimes the weird combinations actually work fine. If not, go with a J-Tek shiftmate.

But it's "close enough"

If I had completely healthy hands there may well have no problem with the Campy shifters. My problem is I'm a 51 year old musician, who's played a lot of soccer ( goalie) and basketball, and my thumbs have had multiple sprains and tendonitis issues for years. Unless you've got big hands. the Campy thumb shifters require you to extend your thumb and then bend it with some force at its peak extension, and this leads to swelling and soreness. On longer rides, it gets to the point where I'm reaching around the handlebar to work the thumb lever with my other fingers. When I recently realized I was doing this, I knew there had to be another way.

Thanks for all the ideas, and good luck with your marriage proposals!
