Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

They do around here. I've seen at least two "in the wild." Absurdly good-looking bike, photos do not tell the full story.

That said, cycling strikes me a little different than motor sports in that ultimately, owning a Pinny is not going to make you faster. And you're not going to impress anyone if you drop $6,000 on the bike and get dropped in the first 10 minutes....

Correct. The 'it looks cool in my driveway' factor goes right out the window on a motorcycle someplace between hour 2 and 3. Between hour 1 and 2 on a 90ºF+ day. That's why I ride this:

Honda ST1300ABS. The sport bike for guys over 40 and anyone who hates a sore ass. AND you can go grocery shopping on it too. Favored by many Euro police departments by the way.

Honda transmissions are more reliable than SRAM double tap, good choice

Amen to that. Everybody at school hates on my '95 Passport for being "gay" and a "Honda". They think their Chevy's and Dodge's are the best, but have constant problems.
I cracked 180,000 today while they have to replace axles and pistons like it's oil.

A 1995 Honda Passport is a rebadged Isuzu. And it is a gay car. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Yeah if it was really a Honda it would be 1000x cooler, and not as gay. SUVs are not cool anyway.

Anyway Ferrari this, Bugatti that.....

All hail to the Caparo T1

THE Bike is the one that you ride. If it's not ridden, it's not THE Bike. Being overly concerned about what others think of your ride is a sign of insecurity (see my sig) and a near-certain path that ends in a funeral for your checkbook. Mine is a 1988 Schwinn Premis (racing level bike from that day) that I've restored and updated a bit. It looks nice, rides nice and it even turns some heads. It is THE Bike. Call me a Fred it you will--I wear it as a badge of honor.

Also, to the OP:

A guy past me on one of those. It's like a bad flashback.... I was riding at 21mph and I hear some breathing behind me (don't know how long he was sucking my wheel, but it couldn't have been more than 2 minutes). I glance back and see this extremely fit cyclist on a new Pinerallo and BAM, he was gone - he past me as if I was standing still! He must've dialed to the high 20's. Call 'em what you want, but some of those guys can haul arse!!!!

What you don't know is that he has a nouveaux riche doping regimen to go with his nouveaux riche bike. Did you see the needle marks on his arms? If you followed him home and asked nicely you might have experienced his Colorado Mountain Room, too.

Of all the sportbikes I owned, the Honda CBR600F2 transmission was by far the smoothest shifting by far. Kawi's feel like rock crunchers by comparo.

It's all opinion.
I like some ducati, indifferent about MV, hate Harley's like I hate Trek...
And everyone will come up and talk to me about my Triumph Thruxton or Bonneville.
But you are right, some brands are a dime a dozen where others you hardly every see.
I own a Rivendell, a custom IRO single speed and now my Felt.
Get whatever puts a rise in your britches and don't worry about what anyone else thinks is cool.

And since we are showing off our motor bikes...

To really, positively turn heads, try one of those... With the Columbia Racer, beware of potholes, though!

Wuuooo the guy ask for help on "the road bike" to buy and I think only one member gave him a bit of an advise.

I have just 10 months experience riding road bikes, and I wanted to buy a nice one too,but here goes my advise.Ride the one you have a lot (6 months) I would say ..put a lot of miles on her and see if cycling is something you'll take seriously, learn how to ride on groups, all the signals and blah blah blah,at the same time go to BS's and ask questions about diferent bikes, about warranty, type of frame you may like etc etc.By now you "should" know if this nice but hard sport is for you, then comes the selection of your road bike, test ride them!!!.

Bikes are like women they come in different colors, shapes etc there are the exotics and the regular bikes, the exotic ones will not make you go faster they just look "exotic" to some and they cost a lot more normally.

exotic bikes.....

Pinarello
Cervelo
Kestrel
Orbea
De Rosa
Colnago
Look

Non exotic Bikes

Specialized
Giant
Scott
Trek
Fuji
Felt
BMC
Jamis
Cannondale

and others but that is my list of "most" important exotics and non exotic bikes

Ride your bike for 6 months at least as hard as you can and "find" out for your self if you "really" are ready to go to step 2 .

By the way I'm a proud owner of a 2008 Orbea Orca and to me is the very best bike all around out there, heeyyyyy is just my point of view.

PD: By the way the best results on the last 7-9 TDF had being accomplished by what I call "Non exotic road bikes"

What do you actually get when you move from a "pedestrian" bike like a Trek to an "exclusive" bike like a Pinnarello? Is it merely brand association or do the high buck bikes actually ride better? And if they ride better, how is it better?

Orbeas are dead common. There are plenty of old steel and aluminium ones laying about on racks in town here - their top-end bikes are nice, but they're not, as a company, notably rare or exotic. Kestrel is not terribly exotic; De Rosa isn't exceptionally so. And Cervelos are extremely common in race circles, but still nice (go to a Triathlon some day - if you've got a Cervelo you'll have trouble identifying it in transition because there are so many).

I'd have said that BMC is rare - I've never seen one in person outside of the TDF. I don't believe I've ever seen a Jamis either.

Though these may just be regional differences - - I've never seen a Saturn in Europe, but Ferraris aren't unusual.

I'll vote for top-end Looks and Times as being über sweet. Even their 'lower'-end bikes are quite impressive.

Treefox, rather that trying to "correct" my opinion on the bikes do you have anything positive to help the forum member who posted the tread ?........ I'm just wondering.

The dude asked what was 'the bike' in terms of rareness, etc. I offered my critique of your offerings based on themes presented by other posters, then noted that I thought Time and Look were pretty sweet.

Compared to the tangents that most BF threads go off on, this was a paradigm of germanity.

So, the shaping of the seat stay and the forks is complete bullsh*t, right? Every time I see these Pinarellos they seem to be the paragon of marketing hype. Aesthetic choices that have no impact on performance. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
