Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Would you recommend a Cannondale?

Hi there,
I’m looking to get myself a new bike of decent quality for a good amount of riding and I was wondering if anyone has any opinions on the quality of the Cannondale brand.
Thanks so much for your opinions.

They are good frames, and many people like them. Like any bicycle, you should test ride it and compare with other bicycles/frames. The geometries, materials, application of materials, and sizing all make for very important factors in deciding which bicycle is best for your needs... ‡

Seeing as you are new to this (road), I would suggest trying out a Cannondale and compare it with other bicycles around the same price range. You *may* like the Cannondale for its geometries and the effects it has both on your riding comfort or manoeuvering. You *may* also dislike it for the very same reasons and choose another bicycle.

Seriously - try and compare, that's the only way you'll know what is best for you.

‡other factors may include the egregious use of branding and decals on every possible mm of your bicycle, but hey, that's your own personal aesthetic choice.

I think you should ride one b4 you decide.
I have ridden of few CDales and don't like them.

It might be the ones I have ridden but I have always found CDales to be way to stiff and harsh riding.

A lot of people like them. It is a preference thing.

It is this type of insightful analysis that brings me back to BF again and again. To be fair anyone who owns a 1980 Corvette would be a top expert on stiff riding vehicles.

Never had one, but would recommend. Probably the best value in pure racing frames, and the top-end frames are awesome too.

I have a CAAD5 frame C'dale. Absolutely love it. So yes, I'd recommend one.

But to echo others, bikes are very much about personal preference. Try one, try others, try as many as you can. See if you like it. There's no reason to NOT recommend a Cannondale, but some folks just prefer other stuff. Would I buy another for myself? In a heartbeat.

When I bought my first road bike I walked in to my local (and well respected) LBS and told the sales guy "I want a bike, don't know anything about them). He asked me a bunch of questions and suggested the Cannondale, and the rest is history...

Good advice. I'll add to that try to test ride as many bikes as you can. Have a good time doing it and take your time. You'll find you develop your likes/dislikes only after you experience a variety of farme materials, geometries, and sizing.

A few years ago I set out to buy a new rode bike and test rode a Cannondale among many many others. I ended up with the Cannondale and have had no regrets.

Anyway, Crack 'n' Fail actually makes some nice road bikes. I wouldn't touch one of their MTBs with a 10-foot pole, though.

They earned a certain reputation with past products, that's for sure. But my Cannondale Rush has been great so far.

Yes, lets continue to judge books by their covers.

We all know how well that works out.

I test rode some cannondales 3 years ago and they felt too stiff and harsh to me as well.
I don't own an 80's corvette though so I guess I'm no expert.

They make nice bikes, the wife has one now... they just weren't for me.

Don't have one, never ridden one. But I'd recommend one in a second. I almost bought a frame recently, but it wasn't to be.

The only Cannondale I ride is a Tandem. For engineering and long life- Dales work but if you do not like a harsh ride- Choose the frame carefully. Test ride before you buy and hit a few bumps or a bit of rough road before you decide.

I'd even recommend the less expensive ones over the more expensive ones that use proprietary parts sourced from FSA.

I just got a CAAD 9 last week and can say what Cannondale has done with aluminum is amazing. My second ride was 70 miles on Tuesday and if my legs would've permitted I would've done more. If you test drive a bike always use your saddle, not the stock saddle that comes on the bike.
