Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I just set up a Fluid 2 and just finished my second workout.

How is this for a beginner?

Avg Speed: 19.87 mph
Avg Cadence: 85
Max Speed: 25.27 mph
Distance: 10.07 miles

On a trainer, speed rarely correlates to the same as on a road, therefore besides keeping the number constant, it doesn't mean much.

Try to up the cadance. Maybe pick up a training DVD

On a trainer, I just go by heart rate and time.

You need to use a HR monitor or some means of measuing power. That could be an excellent workout or a 30 minute slacker effort. For 30 minutes you need to be really pushing it to say it's a decent workout. PLus if you train right, that could be a power workout or a recovery ride.

HR is about 145 - 165 during the ride. Don't know the average. I'm 47. Max HR is around 178, I believe. Resting pulse is about 55.

Like riding outside it is relative.

Better than not riding. As mentioned above get some vieos/dvd to follow a wk out or google some.

You can work on technique drilss, hill /strength work, build some good base miles.

The hard thing is go long on a trainer. I mainly use it to do recovery or easy rides while wathcing TV or some skill drills and intervals.

That's a good workout then based on your HR. The advice from "shark" is sound. If you don't have something like video's or dvd's, you'll likely end up bored or just give up on the trainer. The dvd'd keep you focused and also teach some drills and techniques.

I see you had your HR later in the thread, there you got something to talk about.

Time: 30:26 DECENT WARM UP
Avg Speed: 19.87 mph ZERO - YOU WEREN'T MOVING AT ALL
Avg Cadence: 85
Max Speed: 25.27 mph ZERO - YOU WEREN'T MOVING AT ALL
Distance: 10.07 miles ZERO - YOU DIDN'T GO ANYWHERE
After riding a while outside you will notice very quickly the difference actually moving through the air makes on speed and distance travelled per effort output.

Average speed and cadence are useless (exp on the trainer).

Made some improvement. Max heart rate = 169.

I'm doing my rides at 10 PM after working all day. I'll have to see what I can do when I'm fresh.

I don't think that these data are meaningless when I'm using them on a relative basis.

Time: 30:39
Avg Speed: 20.38 mph
Avg Cadence: 80
Max Speed: 26.17 mph
Distance: 10.71 miles
