Steel Lugged Frame If money was no object...

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Agreed. Since money is no object, I'd build a big ol' "Garage Mahal" in my backyard with a full machine shop, and hire Mr. Koichi Yamaguchi to teach me the art of framebuilding.

That would be nice !

Money is an object for me, but years ago I made a framebuilding jig just using a drill press & handtools (and some creativity)

Mercian. Great bang for the buck, and you can get one fairly quickly. Outstanding quality.

Vanilla and Richard Sachs are two that I am currently considering.

If money were no object I'd get both a Sachs and a Vanilla

...along with a Kirk, a Moyer, a Zanc, a Llewellyn, a Mooney, a Spectrum, a Goodrich, an Oswald, a Haverty, a Naked, a Davidson, a Moon, a Bob Brown, and what the hell, throw in a Pegoretti even though it's not lugged.

But money is an object. So I'm just going to get a Sachs. One of these days.

Why lugged? For aesthetics?

Yeah, but if money is no object, I'm sure there must be ways to get yourself bumped up in the queue.

i had no idea the market was like this for nice custom steel frames. People are planning on paying $3000 in 2013 cash for a frame? I hope they do the fitting then, or it'd be like a bride in a dress she bought before she got fat.

When I started talking to Mr. Sachs that was the first question I asked: Are you gonna hold me to the measurements that accompany my deposit, or allow me the courtesy of getting re-fit much closer to the frame's fabrication time? His answer was something to the effect that none of the variables on the order form that accompany the deposit are binding. He'll give you a holler when your name's about to come up in the queue, at which time you can say "Oh and by the way I've lost 3" in leg length and gained 150 pounds!"

And I wish it were only $3000 in 2013 dollars. Newsflash: It's already well over $3000 in 2007 dollars!

Richard Sachs, Vanilla, Kirk, Jonny Cycles, J.P. Weigle, Goodrich, Zanconato, and Waterford. Not necessarily, in that order but pretty close...

I own one and it's a fantastic bike, but if money is no object you'll get better work all around from one of the good American custom builders. If money =is= an object, Mercian is unbeatable.

What a conundrum. Probably a Mercian or Tommasini then.. My favourite steel bike of all time is the fillet brazed Casati Linea Oro though!

This is the fillet brazed version... with Centaur CG (a beautiful group, and one I am lucky enough to own).
