Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Fair price on this used road bike?

I got someone willing to sell me his Lemond Nevada City road bike. It's either a 2001 or 2002, back when it was made of Reynolds 853 (which is why i'm interested in it). Sora components (yeah, i know not the best). Very good condition, with low miles. What's a fair price on this? I see someone selling for $220 on Craigslist (but not in my city), and at the same time there is a bike shop selling one for $400 (obviously a bike shop is gonna mark it up a lot more). Then there's a used one with a better Ultegra groupo for $400 (again, not in my city). So I'm a little confused as to where a fair middle-ground might be....

That gets pretty subjective (condition) and very localized as well. Portland is so bike-crazy right now that virtually any bike that wasn't sold at Wal-Mart fetches over $200 on CL. That 'Ultegra' comparison you found wouldn't last more than a few hours in a shop here.

I'd go to $300 if it fits and functions well. Solid frame material from a good company. The Sora stuff will work just fine if it's adjusted correctly. I'm waiting for my Sora brifters to die, but they're still working great after 7.5 years.

I bought one new in 2002 (I think) for $600. It was my first road bike and no be honest I never did like that bike. Actually, I disliked it so much I will never own another LeMond but that's just me. Never the less, I wouldn't pay over $225 or so now for it (if I liked it).

It's not like there's a KBB price guide to road bikes, other than skimming expired eBay auctions, so if you're seeing prices between $200 and $400, I'd say that a fair middle ground would be $300.

Anyway, those Renos are nice bikes and the frame is definitely solid. You'll probably like it if you buy it, so why not?

I'd pay about $200ish.

I imagine the whole NW is bike crazy. Does everyone in PDX have a bike rack on their car? lol.
