Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Mavic R-Sys?

Been a Ksyrium SL guy for years. Anyone have any insight on the new R-Sys wheels? I'm bout ready to upgrade and thought they might be a good choice. I wanna hear some feedback from here first though.... Thanks!

Moderate stiffness, not exceptionally light (esp for the price), not aero, and too $$$$$

Any system that makes re-tensioning and replacing spokes harder and even more time consuming is a bad thing in my book.

From what I hear, the whole concept makes the maintenance a pain. I suppose the whole selling point is that they don't need maintenance though, but the jury is still out on that one.

IMO i think they are over price . I just picked up some ES's from performance for 530$ + shipping. not bad. But for $1200 I would not touch the R-Sys. But if you have money burning a hole in your pocket do whatever makes you happy. There is nothing worse than buying a specific part and then getting rid of that to get what you originally wanted. Some will say for half the money you can build a better wheelset, lighter wheelset, etc.. but at the end of the day if the R-sys is what you want I say get it. But get it off ebay for under $1000. because shops have been listing them at 1200+. As for performance, i have not ridden them but for the MSRP there are alot of options that may be better.

Dang, $530, you got the deal of the year. I just got a set and paid about $600 through ebay and I thought that was a super deal for a new set. I'm just waiting for my new cassette to arrive today so I can hook it all up and give them a go. A nice brisk Christmas eve ride is just what I need.

I don't think it's possable to get them that low from Performance.

$779.99 (list price on Performance)
$624.00 (with 20% off)
$561.60 (with 20% off and 10% member back)

I'm still debating whether or not to get the R-Sys' , I like the way they look, the stiffness that I hear so much about, and the light weight. The only turn-off's are that I can build wheels for cheaper and about the same weight, and they're not very aero.
But if I build wheels, I doubt they'd be as stiff.

According to weight weenies, the ES is listed by Mavic at 1485, but actually weighs 1528.9.

Point 9. Those guys are nuts...

I would imagine the SL is a little heavier, too. The SSC SL, according to WW, is 1624...that's the 05 version.

I would also imagine there's probably a little variation from wheel to wheel. I have a set of ESs on the way (that red hub is going to look so goddamn good with my Scott...), and I'm planning on weighing them, just to satisfy my curiosity. More than half a pound lighter than my Elites...soon to be on Ebay...
