Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Will I stink up the house?

My wife is going out of town for 6 days, so I get to temporarily revert to my bachelorial ways. I told her that I was going to set up my trainer in the living room with a mat to keep from messing the place up, but I got some immediate and strong pushback on that. The complaint is that I'll stink up the house.

I'm thinking about doing it anyway, but only if I don't stink up the house. Will this work? I get very messy when I'm on the trainer, and some sessions are long. My longest workout lasts over 5 hrs if I do it as designed. Even on the much shorter workouts, I still get very yucky.

If you're wondering why I shouldn't just ride outside or in the garage, these are naturally options. However, when the weather sucks , I work harder on the trainer than I do in the great outdoors and I get plenty of cold, dark, and rainy conditions on my commute anyway. Also, it will be nicer for the dog if she can sleep on the couch while I ride.

As long as you shower, wash your clothes and clean up their should be no smell. Also take out the trash, clean the dog, and do the dishes.

I usually stink up the house with burnt rubber smell during trainer intervals.

( I can't adjust the tension on my resistance unit)

Just smoke a good cigar after your workout, that should cover up the BO.

It's just the stock routine on the DVD (actually, there are 3 disks). I find that the workouts I get from my spinervals DVDs are no joke.

Turn down the heat and open the windows. Put the bike/trainer or rollers on a tarp and sweat to your heart's content.

Well, you can try some dry tea leaves and baking soda (in packs) around your house. They absorb odour, and are cheap enough to just buy in massive bulk. Just open up a few packs, and leave them there, they'll suck up all that bad stench to a degree. You just have to make sure the source of the stench is eliminated, otherwise it'll keep coming back.

coffee grains don't work, so you can have your cup of coffee. dry tea leaves and baking soda only.

Unfortunately, that would be me. Damn!

However, based on the feedback people are giving, it looks like I'll be able to pull this off.

Use one of those box fans to keep a breeze on you and keep the sweat evaporating. And for God's sake, don't ask permission! If she finds out, just beg a bit of forgiveness.

Another thing I found from my days commuting without a shower at work... If you take a shower before you sweat, you don't get that BO smell.

It'll make the place smell of manliness. She'll love it.

+1

Or even just an old beach towel. And make sure you've not lubed your chain too recently or excessively, lest drops of oil get flung about the place.

I must be doing something wrong. Didn't know smells linger after a workout and shower. On occasion, I smell burnt rubber, but that's for those times that I lose concentration from the min numbing ordeal and roll off the rollers; I leave skid marks too, but it sounds like you have a trainer so that shouldn't be a problem.

On second thoughts, is this a real question? re: you stinking. Or did you just want to 1. brag about being free to workout 2. start a thread .. just for kix (both options are great, by the way).

Light a smelly candle. That's all I do. Even if you don't train indoors, she will blame any smell on you when you get back anyway, so just do it.

Partly #2, partly because I was wondering if there actually is a smell issue for people with sensitive noses days after the fact. #1 may have been a factor, but that was not a conscious motivation. I think I smell just fine all the time and so does the dog

You're certain we're still talking about riding a bicycle here .. ? What kind of dog do you have? Male or female?

My wife claims we both stink -- me after riding my bike, the dog all the time. The word she uses to describe me if I've been riding hard is "gross." The dog never got this label except when she got caught eating dog crap and I told her to give my wife a kiss

Besides, who wouldn't rather get a snootfull of unbathed dog than unbathed human? FrankBattle, the dog is female. She has cancer which has made quite a change in the way she smells.

this.

human stink will stick to your clothes. the house will get humid but not reek up.

it'll be your stink anyway and if she doesn't already love it, get a replacement

When I lived in Winnipeg, my trainer LIVED in my living room. That's where I did all my workouts. Where else would a person do them???

Open the window, take a shower, do laundry.

Normally, the garage -- fully half of the area is dedicated to bikes and my tools. If we didn't have a dog, I wouldn't bother to move the setup in the house because the workbench by the trainer is great for holding food, water, remotes, etc.
