Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

They added trim to Red. Which really depending who you talk to is either needed or not needed. I run Force with compact crank. Never really missed trim.

I think the 3 biggest changes from Force to Red (aside from the weight and crazy single piece cassette) are the big-ring FD trim, shorter throw to get from the small to large chainrings, and the adjustable reach for both levers. Of all those things, I most wanted to the shorter throw, as it can be difficult when my hands are very cold to get into the big ring. I went with Red for my new Tarmac for those reasons, as well as the weight, and the bling. I have Force on my Giant and Rival for my Tricross.

Ive never needed trim in the big ring. I have used the small ring trim a couple of times tho.

Since you have rode all three, taking into account the cost of each which would you recommend? Is the red really worth the premium? or is rival really close and a third of the price?

Well, I've only used Force (on my Giant) and Rival (on a bike I borrowed for a week). I'm still building the bikes with Red and Rival. Force and Rival are the exact same thing except for finish materials and a few grams. Red's improvements are all in the shifters. The best "bang for the buck" would probably be Red shifters with Rival everything else. Note however that the Red RD and BB have ceramic bearings. I also didn't pay anywhere near retail from my Red stuff...

Red. Just upgraded from Force and don't regret it one bit!
Red is the first group to make me stop dreaming of Record.

I have Record on my System Six and Force on a Demo Super Six. I prefer the Record but just for personal preference. I do have a bit of trouble with rubbing the front Der. on the Force group when cross chainingthe big ring but that is it. It might have to do with the fact that I have a small bike and probably a worse chain line when crossed up. I hear others don't rub at all. Overall I like the feel of the hoods and the thumb lever on the Record, but those are personal preferences. The Force is silly light. Out of the box, the Super Six with Force was 14.5 lbs. in a 50cm! The bike I demo is Force but the bike I spent MY money on is Record.
