Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cheap workstand?

Anyone know of one that works well? I can't possibly imagine why these things get to be so god damn expensive.

Bikes: Trek 1500D

I use a rope tied to the rafters and then looped around the seatpost and handlebars. Cheap enough?

I got the a cheap park stand (pcs-9) on ebay.com for $80 shipped. Cheapest I could find at the time, works fine but could be more stable.

edit: Just checked performance bike, crap that sheehit is expensive. Try pricepoint's house brand.

I went the same route as steaktaco. Mine wasn't quite as good of a deal, but I think it cost me about 100 bucks once I covered shipping. These things are freaking heavy so shipping is pricey. Honestly, I kind of regret not spending a little bit more and getting a nicer stand that is a little easier to store.

Bikes: Time ADH01, Merlin Extra Light, Orbea Orca, Ritchey Outback,Tomac Revolver Mountain Bike, Cannondale Crit 3.0 now used for time trials.

For many years, I used two metal shelf racks bolted to the wall. They have a U scoop at the ends for a metal or wooden hanger rod. I slipped a section of old tire tube over this part to protect the frame and then cradle the frame in the two U things along the top tube. Works fine and cost about 8 bucks.

I usually just use my trainer but it's not exactly optimal for building a bike and it's a real pain in the arse to adjust gear related stuff (let alone mount it)

Lucky me, I have a bike room. But while I don't have to put it away, I also regret not spending a bit more: clamp could be easier to use, and stand isn't quite strong enough for bottom bracket removal.

I have this stand: https://bikemart.com/itemdetails.cfm?id=912

And it works quite well. Usually $80-100 on sale.

How cheap do you want? Nashbar has the Spin Doctor for $60. I got a Minoura RSX stand from them for less, and its a decent product...sadly, they don't have it anymore.

If you search instructables, there are a few easy and cheap ways to make one yourself.

That's what I have been doing. That PVC on looks interesting, I can't imaging it being too sturdy. I might have to make one.

Got my Park PCS-9 on ebay for $90 shipped. It has served me well in the year I've had it.

Last I checked the same guy had them, but they were $100 shipped.

I just scanned craigslist every day for a couple of weks... found this park professional stand, solid base for $125-150... I forget which.

I was in a Lowe's looking at plastic covered screw hooks for hanging garden tools on a garage wall and they now have a fold down bicycle storage "hook." It is shaped like a triangle and cradles the top tube of the frame at two points about 14 inches apart. It does not cost much more than $10, if that. You could mount it to the wall. I have played with the idea of mounting it to a piece of 2 x 4 or 2 x 6 about six feet long. Then I would make a base for the 2 x 4 or 2 x 6, possibly one that folds up. I do not have that part worked out yet. Lately Wal-Mart has had a similar bicycle hanger that folds up in two parts. I think I like the Lowe's version better.

I say bite the bullet and get a decent one... it's not like you buy a workstand every year (or at least shouldn't be)
