Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm sure I'm one of his best customers, but I doubt I'm in the top 20.

You have no idea. This is NY, as in the immediate NY City vicinity. It's above your pay grade. It's above my pay grade. The townhouses adjacent to the complex Piermont Bicycle Connection is in generally sell in the $1 million + range. Gorgeous Hudson town. I was married in an amazing Hudson Riverfront restaurant about 100 meters from this bike shop, about a year before they had even opened (married in '92, Piermont opened in '93, I've been a customer there ever since).

All circumstantial evidence of course, but let's just say they sell tons of high end bike crap.

fwiw, they're more like 15 miles from Manhattan. And while they certainly sell an awful lot of nice bikes, I would hazard a guess that Signature Cycles or Conrad's (both in Manhattan) sell more bikes in the five digit price range in a week than Piermont Bicycle Connection does in a month.

Nontheless, I love dealing with Glen @ Piermont. And I'll bet they have more profitible "walk in" traffic for accessories & apparell than any of the Manhattan shops.

I know Paul Levine of Signature (the Ultimate Super Weenie by Which All Others Shall Be Judged). Paul is from my neck of the woods (Orange County). I doubt Signature outsells Piermont 4-1, but they may well sell more (very) high end bikes. I'm guess Piermont's gross sales are higher, driven an astonishing volume of accessory sales. Which is far more profitable than bicycle sales anyway.

By the way, in Orange County where I live, 10 miles is 15 miles, hence my arithmetic. It's also mainly uphill and always into a 20mph westerly head wind. God help me, it's still snowing. Hard.

maybe you are still joking but campy UT cranksets are about the best thing out. I ride shimano dura ace and campy bikes and I have to tell you straight up the UT cranks with their bearing system is far better than my shimano bike and that's with running ceramic BB bearings in the shimano offering.

The q factor didn't change either for campy's external setup. While the shimano bike is buttery smooth. I really do like the q factor of the campy bike better.

With all that said, last year I rode the shimano bike 4X as much but every time I got on the campy bike I went....damn this front crank is SMOOTH.

When I built up my X bike, I chose campy just because I liked the crank so much. My new PF group buy bike is going to be Centaur because:
I already had it
It is lighter than Ultegra SL
Lighter than Rival

Now if you are talking current Campy then maybe you are right but the campy that made the UT cranks, 1st to 10 speed and other things....well...that's pretty dang good.

pro bike kit has Dura Ace for $121 and record for $206.

Go check the price for SRAM RED cassette:

Is that true? My LBS's opinion: Campy is nice, but way overpriced. D.A. is the best value in high end components. Few bike shops sell as many high end road bikes as my LBS.

because I haven't seen any place selling 10 speed ultegra cassettes for $40. The CHEAPEST I have recently seen was about $46 from PBK with the 15% off and is now $53 on PBK.

I saw 105 for about $35 recently on PBK and it weighed oh...7 grams more than Ultegra and is now $39 on PBK.

You were talking value. That's a value cassette. Me? I'm running ultegra and Dura Ace but for $39...damn...it's almost a no brainer for a training cassette.

How can you NOT? Have you ridden both? There is ZERO bearing load on the campy bike's cranks. Best design bar none.

hell, the dura ace bike even has ceramic derailer pulley bearing. That's how stupid I am.

I was excited because I thought it'd be cool, but when I went in there you could tell that they were trying way too hard to be a hip bike shop. They had all of their road bikes on one side of the store, all Giants, and none with anything better than 105 components on them. Then the sales guy was acting like these bikes were the best bikes out there. I can imagine how someone new to cycling could be fooled by the sales pitch, but it was just pathetic.

"felt" or feels?

I still ride both and alternating between days there is a difference to me. I still ride the DA bike more but the difference is there.

Did i fly back from Austria and land in the Twilight Zone? WTF is the point of this post?

I'm the opposite of the people that got Cypress banned (fat people eating cake is one of the most ironic bits of comedy) but I'm failing to see why this one is funny.
