Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

what kinda gloves do you

guys like, i saw tho PI ones with the gel inserts, gimmick or useful? I'm regreting buying the novara gloves i got on discount. They're hard to take off and have a weird fit, but were only 13 bucks, I was thinking maybe capo gloves and use these for commuting?

My first pair were Chibas....not enough palm padding, recently bought a pair of PBK mitts for this season and they have a little more padding. Tried on a pair of Castellis at the LBS and REALLY wanted those, but the $35 price tag wasn't working for me.

I just bought the cheapest ones that were at my LBS. My hands never bother me, so I guess it works fine. They're pearl izumis with no gel or anything just regular padding. I think they were about $15.

I'm down to spend the 30-39 on the gloves if they're worth it, i might just wear out these novara ones and wait till i have my summer jersey and bib short from capo together.

I don't like gel in gloves, but it's a personal preference. I happen to like my pair of nike gloves because I got them on sale for 10 dollars.

I was disappointed in my Pearl Izumi Gel Lites. The palms wore too quickly and the gel parts were thrashed almost right away (although that was a good thing because they put pressure on my hand instead of alleviate any).

I am very happy with my Specialized BG Sport gloves fwiw.

I've been using PI gloves for about 4-5 years now. They wear quickly and I typically go through about 2-3 pairs a year....but....PI covers them. Return them to where you purchased them and they will be replaced for free.

Luckily I live near a PI outlet that has absolutely no issues with exchanging the pairs out for new ones. I have done it with the same initial pairs about 3 times already. So really I've gotten a lot of life out of a small upfront expenditure.

I have the PI Gel Lites, they're OK. Not a fan of the polyester back.
I'm looking to get some new ones, very soon.

EDIT: Got them.

Check out PBK. I ride one of their gel gloves and have been completely happy. Good price as expected from PBK. Plus they have loops between fingers to assist with removal.

i wasn't a fan of wearing gloves but got over how cold my hands would get on morning and evening rides and the constant rubbing and drying of my skin so i kinda liked the capos because they felt like latex gloves more than overly padded mittens.

Well, after several other pairs from various manufacturers fell to bits in short order, I bought a pair of Rapha crochet mitts, and although way pricey, I love them. They have worn in rather than out, and fit like errr....well you know.

I like the Descente Pro glove for summer. For cold weather nothing beats the Assos Early Winter.

When I first started out riding a mtb I wore a pair of Lizard Skins full finger gloves. They did the job well, not too flashy, but they did not hold up well after a period of time and soon the material wore out.

Later on when I switched over to road cycling, I started out on my roadie without any gloves. My hands felt comfy on the Campy hoods and I did not see any need to use any gloves. However I got a pair of Pearl Izumi half finger Gel-Lite race gloves. The glove size felt a bit too tight for my hands and I wasn't very happy with the padding on the gloves; they felt like a half-hearted effort. I sold them after a couple of rides.

I resumed riding glove-less for a couple of months, then I chanced upon Rivendell's crochet gloves on their website. During this time I was moving from the "wanna-be racer" mentality to the "retrogrouch" one. I bought the gloves as I wanted to try out how crochet gloves felt like in humid weather (I live in Singapore). Once again I was left disappointed at the padding, this time it was too thick until the extent that I had a hard time reaching for my brake levers with the gloves on.

Then I bought a pair of Rapha's crochet gloves and I have never looked back since. They fit my hands perfectly, stitching was top-notch, the leather was luxurious for a pair of cycling gloves, and they ooze style from every seam. So far my favourite pair of gloves, and one of the few cycling accessories that I definitely cannot do without. I had spent quite a bit of green on the gloves, but to me it was worth it.

Another fellow Rapha crochet glove user here. Glad you're happy with the gloves too. The purchase was could either be a foolish waste of money or money well spent, and I'm glad it was the latter.

I find less is more as far as padding goes. The placement of the padding is more important to me...in the wrong place and it adds pressure rather than subtracts it. Most important though is fit...PI's don't work very well for me, nor did a pair of Assos I picked up...both wind up pinching between the fingers. I found some Louis Garneau's on the other hand that are perfect. For my hands, that is....

Gloves work best with padding. That is why I wear them. I especially prefer the one's I have with gel inserts.

Specialized BG Ridge, £20 from Cycle Surgery.

Not sure how good they are compared to others, but in isolation, they work fine for me. Get cold in real cold days (to be expected), pretty good for warmer months. Light. Nice colours (black grey, spot of red).
