Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Looking for nice set of light clincher wheels

Hi. I currently own Xero XR-3 wheels, which are around 2000 grams for the set, and am looking for a lighter set. I have been looking for the Mavic (like the Ksyrium ES and SL with the red spoke ) but they are too expensive everywhere (over $700). Are there any alternatives that match the look and the features of those wheelsets for a lesser price? I have seen other brands like Wolf, Easton, Borantger but am not familiar with their models or features. Just in case, My bike is a Giant A1-07 and have a new TCR composite frame comming my way !!!

Thanks,

FRancisco

There is diminishing return in your investment if overly preoccupied with wheel weight which many are. Nth degree lightness is noise in the cosmos unless you are an elite racer.

Bang for buck?
At 1600-1700 grams per set, a lower end Campy wheelset is impossible to beat for the money. You can find Scirrocos for $300 USD and Zondas for $400. They are bombproof and literally never go out of true even if a clyde.
HTH.

Unless you're racing crits, or accelerating up mountains a lot - wheelset weight isn't going to be as important as aerodynamics.

Aerodynamics only come in to play at high speeds, lighter you will feel all the time. Unless you are time trialling go light.

Do a search on them, but bdcheng seemed to have some bad experiences with those wheels. I would go with the williams or the reynolds solitudes.

Get something built. rruff or waterrockets could build you a set of wheels that are better, lighter and stiffer than Ksyriums.

A set of Nio27 or Nio30 hoops
Good spokes, such as CX-Rays or even standard 2.0/1.8
Good hubs (White, DT, new D/A)

Same weight or lighter than Ks. Stiffer. More serviceable. More aero.

Actually, in a 6-turn 40-lap crit, I came up with a 0.18% required energy difference (no, not 1.8% or 18%) between Ksyrium ESs and LEWs, due to wheel weight. We're talking about 635g difference. That's exaggerating the actual accelerations that take place in a crit.

Aerodynamics makes a much bigger difference.

The roads in Puerto Rico are iin pretty bad shape as compaqred to the ones in the US, so would need something that can withstand bad roads. Any additional suggestions taking this into consideration?

I've been shopping around looking at the Easton wheels and that's a great price. The thing is, the Ascents are pushed as a climbing wheel with an emphasis on lower weight. I came to the conclusion that for the riding I do (no big climbs) and my weight (190 lbs.) the Orion 2 was the better choice.

The Orion II is identical to the Ascent with a few more spokes. Have to see now if Jenson has Orions....
