Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

the SRAM red cassette is first forged, then milled. Link: https://www.roadcyclinguk.com/news/article/mps/uan/2565

Don't do it. Deep down, you'll know your dirty little secret that you're not riding full Dura Ace. One day, you'll be contesting an uphill finish, or just king of the mountain bragging rights on your local training ride.
You'll remember that Ultegra cassette, and just thinking about the added weight, will be the straw that breaks the Camel's back, the physical and pschological burden will make you crack and keep you from pulling through for victory.

And there you'll be knowing that you're a cheapskate poser wannabe, that could have been a contender had you not cheaped out.

It's not uncommon for items that complex will be forged to a rough shape first. It it was out of billet it would take forever to machine and cost even more .

If they sell well this is the perfect kind of item for us to add on at my current company. We have the capability and currently do a similar part. Maybe we'll use up some open capacity by making bike parts...

.....HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

*wipes tear from eye* That was funny.

After reading the article the face plate seems to be Aluminum. The noise that was mentioned while riding in the largest cog could be caused by the fact that the largest gear tooth forms are directly "above" where the AL plate is pressed in. It could be possible that parts of the chain plates are in contact with that AL plate resulting in a different gear mesh sound making it sound like it is rubbing, or otherwise more noisy than other gear combos.

...just a thought.

How come? That would seem odd since they're 10-speed only cassettes.

The 10s-Only Shimano wheels have deeper splines that are incompatible with SRAM 10s cassettes and all 9s/8s cassettes.

Spline depth of 10spd only Shimano freehubs is much deeper than the Shimano 8-9-10 freehubs. Allowed for use of Aluminum freehub bodies without as much notching.

The SRAM Red cassette seems to have the shallower 8-9 spline allowing it to be used on any Shimano freehub body except the deeper 10 spd specific ones.
