Helmets put us at risk???

Don't know if this was posted, but it's a little old....

http://www.bath.ac.uk/news/articles/...ing110906.html

I hope people don't use this to justify not wearing one.

GatorFL 02-24-08 12:40 PM

Maybe he's one of those guys who's worried about getting stuck in his seatbelt if he drives over a bridge and doesn't wear it to be safe.

Terror_in_pink 02-24-08 12:47 PM

Oh my god, that article gives me nightmares. I used to write abstracts for a transportation engineering library and this article remind me of the thousands i read.

keisatsu 02-24-08 12:47 PM

the last bit about women cyclists was the most interesting...

I'm gonna keep wearing my helmet though, I'll just kick the car if it's too close.

correct.

helmet troll threads are always old.

AEO 02-24-08 12:52 PM

I'd still rather have the helmet since my skin has allergies to asphalt and concrete.

Doctor Who 02-24-08 12:52 PM

You're right. This news is way old.

Thanks for posting it again.

Reynolds 02-24-08 12:55 PM

Some helmets put my pocket at risk.

Oh don't worry that could never happen.

redirekib 02-24-08 01:18 PM

By old, do you mean like Methuselah?

patentcad 02-24-08 01:19 PM

Not wearing helmets puts a new twist on the slogan Live Free AND Die.

Hobartlemagne 02-24-08 01:22 PM

I think his statistics can be misleading. 100% of his rides with and without a helmet resulted
in him NOT being hit by a car. He also didn't study any other collision types other than cars
approaching from behind. I doubt helmet use or non-helmet use has any correlation with the
odds of getting doored also.

redirekib 02-24-08 01:27 PM

Actually, my helmet gives me a false sence of security. After getting a rather expensive helmet I started to ride with my eyes closed but after a while I found that that wasn't much of a thrill so I started playing chicken with tractor trailers.

Beaker 02-24-08 08:31 PM

Now this really is foo. Being of scientific a disposition I wonder if he rode the exact same distance from the edge of the tarmac each time he went out - did he track what traffic might have been coming the other way while measuring passing distances? After being hit twice while wearing his helmet he chose the more radical response of "hmmm, if only I hadn't been wearing my helmet perhaps I wouldn't have been hit" rather than the more popular "holy crap, good job I had my helmet"

The only point I can see him proving here was made by Charles Darwin some time before.

StephenH 02-24-08 08:37 PM

The obvious thing to do is to determine exactly what appearance causes motorists to avoid the rider like a plague. Perhaps he can prove that we can all safe if only we'll wear clown suits while swinging dead armadillos about.

ElJamoquio 02-24-08 08:39 PM

It's been forever since we had a good helmet-fest. I hope it spices things up around here a bit.

Only if you're an ass hat.

and you'd be more likely to be hit by traffic -- better off farting without that helmet....hang on...you don't suppose that farting could be an even better traffic repellent?

 I don't know why, but you cracked me up with that.

And by the way, you're a ***** - tractor trailers are so yesterday, dude. Try that playing chicken crap with a semi next time and then we'll all be impressed. :p

Where have you been? http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...ar+helmet+your

Unless that was sarcasm, which is hard to read without a winkie thingy. ;)

BlazingPedals 02-24-08 09:31 PM

I wonder how he measured distances with such accuracy that he could discern a 3.5" difference between helmeted/bare-headed?
