Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bike Direct's website is funny

IMPORTANT SMART SHOPPER WARNING -
If you see another Ultegra bike for around $1,000 - LOOK VERY CLOSELY AT THE SPECS. Many of our competitors are offering OLD OLD Lower TECH 9 Speed Ultegra bike with heavy housebrand wheels WITHOUT Name brand Cane Creek Brakes AND they use Cheaper Aluminum Cranks.
Don't be fooled into wasting your hard earned cash on a lower quality, heavier and lower tech bike. Remember... no sales tax* (49 States) + UPS GROUND SHIPPING is included in the price to 48 STATES.
PLUS - FREE Clipless Road Pedals ($80 MSRP)

Who's still selling 9 speed ultegra bikes or 9 speed bikes in general?

Oh yeah....

well, this one has dura ace shifters at least:

https://www.bikesdirect.com/products/surly/longhaul.htm

dang...here's this one has that "heavy aluminum crank"

https://www.bikesdirect.com/products/...ier_corvus.htm

Heck, this one has an ISIS BB

I just hate how they market their bikes on eBay with false comments like:

"Lance rode Mercier in blah blah race, said he loved it!"

Too bad that wasn't the same company... but alas, nobody cares. And who are BD's "competitors" anyway? Wal Mart?

Yeah, I know, but they aren't the first to do it. Still, who are they trying to fool?

When Lance won the Tour, people assumed he rode a Trek, some even had the nerve to suggest it may be a Litespeed. Only on taking the bike completely apart it was revealed that he actually won on a BikesDirect Mango.

I've been on my Moto IF for 1.5 years now and love it. Got exactly what the spec was with no frills and no problems. 5,000 miles on a Tiagra budget works for me too. In a few years maybe I'll get another and still have spent less than one bike that looks prettier on a poster.

You'd think the complainers never listened to the utter nonsense that comes out of the mouths of most LBS salespeople. One of my favorites is "You should get a 10 speed instead of a 9 because it's faster - its got an extra speed."

I didn't know Tiagra came in 10 spd. Maybe the OP is being disingenuous.

Yep, I'm in the market for a cross bike, too, and it looks like it will be a Motobecane. I've checked out some local stores and I'd say BD is transparent and understated in comparison to a couple of the slimy sales guys I've dealt with. I can't see the point in paying hundreds more for that kind of service.

And these threads slamming BD mostly reinforce my decision. I note there are almost never any actual BD customers who think they were misled in their purchase or are dissatisfied with their bikes.

OK, now I'm really curious about BD. I've seen their ads and always wondered if Motobecane is still a good brand, or did someone buy the name in a firesale and slap it on junk bikes? They seem to feature Motobecane a lot, and as a former owner of one (well, my ex), I thought they were good bikes. I just went to the site and saw they have Kestrel and Windsor (hey, my first "real" road bike! - 30+ yrs ago). I've got no idea about the Windsor brand these days (haven't seen it in decades!), but isn't Kestrel still considered decent?

So why would someone snicker, or did your frame say "BikesDirect" on it, or some other totally obvious clue?

They are only decal packages. BD trades off the history of the names they have purchased/licensed/appropriated.

Dude, just think of the day Dura Ace goes 11 speed and you can actually say

'My bike goes to 11'.
