Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What do you do with your cables on wing bars?

I'm installing some FSA Wing bars, and I didn't plan on wrapping all the way to the stem, but leaving the flat part unwrapped. Unfortunately my cables curl right over this spot, and I get a handful of housing along with the wing bit, and I don't like how it feels.

So what did you do? I think I have it easy since Shimano only has one cable there, but I'm curious how this problem should be solved.

Thanks

I have a similar set-up and have no problem with the cables.

I taped the cables onto the handlebars on the parts that will be covered by the tape. One piece of tape before the bend and one after.

From there it goes straight enough to not really bother me.

Maybe your cable housing is too long so it gets "curled" up in the spot you are referring to.

Or maybe yours is okay and you just need to get used to the exposed cable housing.

Good luck!

ok, I'm pretty sure my housing is too long them. There's no good way of cutting that w/o replacing the brake cables, unfortunately.

Thanks for the responses and the picture.

Are you talking about a K-wing? I beleive that is what is pictured. The cables run through the bar so I'm not sure how they would get in the way.

You don't have to replace the brake cables, just clip as close to the crimped end as possible and be careful backing them out of the shifter. You should be able to cut the empty housing and re-run the same brake cables. To measure for good length, turn the handle bars all the way to one side and pull the housing snug, not tight (be sure to also leave room for the ferrule in the stop).

Even then, they run around $5 each which shouldn't be a problem if you're dropping the money on wing bars.

Alternatively, your LBS should be able to do it quick and cheap.

Yeah, I'll try that. I'm not a big spender, as I have aluminum FSA wing bars off ebay (they didn't cost $30 shipped). My LBS sells generic cables from their repair shop for $1.75, so it really would be cheap -- but I just replaced one YESTERDAY. Seems ridiculous.

ps -- I don't pay for labor, it's a principle I stand by since my car crapped out once and I learned that mechanical stuff doesn't take a Ph.D. I'll get it working -- thanks for the suggestions and help.

Simple. You throw away your wing bars because they are fred central ghey-licious. No-one with any sort of self respect or talents rides with them. So un-pro.
