Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Planet Bike Superflash too bright for group rides?

Is this thing too bright for group rides?

I bought one yesterday and it is BRIGHT. Seriously, I looked at the top "main" LED directly and it hurt my eyes. I'm going to keep it for my night rides but am not so sure if I will use it for my group rides. Do you think I could just aim it more downwards?

I use mine a lot on evening group rides. No one has complained yet.

Yeah, me too. And no complaints... of course, I am usually "guarding the six" off the back.

I had one of those shining in my face on a group ride. It's not pleasant. Guard the six or keep it off flash mode. It is an awesome light, tho'.

You could angle it slightly downwards

It's too distracting on flash, it should be OK when steady.

In flash mode, you could call for a day/night helo extraction.

I've been sent to the back in flash mode. I've had guys lean over and turn flash mode off during a ride. One ex military guy seemed to have some flashbacks when it was in flash mode.

yeah, I would just keep it off flash mode.
now if you had a dinotte, I think they would send you to the back or hit your with a frame pump

It has a "flash mode"? A guy on our group rodes uses one and it is distracting. So far he hasn't got the hint that is a distraction when following at 25mph.

Funny this thread comes up today. I was on a team ride just yesterday getting complaints that my tail light was sending people into epileptic fits...I just went to the back and drafted until the sun came up.

It's not too bright, but IMHO, it's rude to run the strobe/flash setting when your mates are (closely) behind you.
