Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

1UPUSA trainer - resistance fluctuation

I purchased this trainer and have put in a lot of hours on during the off season. Back in the fall I noticed that it was really giving me problems with fluctuating resistance. I would feel (and see on the PT) the resistance increasing during the interval, my cadence would drop so I stayed in the correct power range, but once it dropped to a point I would be forced to change gears, usually two. About 20 seconds after changing gears and getting to the right spot the resistance would start to decrease and I'd have to change again. This game continues to go on until a recovery period.

I contacted 1UPUSA and they sent me out a replacement resistance unit. It didn't seem to have any issues for a couple months but lately it's been doing the same thing. It's incredibly frustrating to be fussing with gears during a tough interval and it's caused me to quit in the middle of a few workouts.

Does anyone else have this problem with the 1UP trainer? Is there something I'm doing wrong to cause it?

What about other brands of trainers - shouldn't trainers be pretty fluid and consistent in their resistance?

Send it back yet again. Or...
I sanded down the pad and it seems to be really even now.

I had trouble with mine too, the resistance would really ramp up for no discernable reason, and as I'm in the UK it was too far to send it back. But greasing the axle and the spring fixed it. I had to lightly grease them about every five hours to keep it running smoothly. (Take care to keep grease off the resistance pad, obviously!)

It didn't get rid of the rhythmic, rattling noise though. But it's still the quietest trainer I've used.

I wouldn't be happy with a trainer that changed the resistance at all. I would consider selling it on Ebay and buying a Kurt Kinetic Road Machine (I actually bought mine from 1UPUSA). I have had mine for 2-3 years and there is absolutely no change in resistance (measured with my PT).

I had a lot of problems with fluctuating resistance when I was using the Blackburn trakstand ultra version of the 1up resistance unit. I returned it to my LBS after a week and got a kinetic road machine. Much better and the resistance unit is solid. Cycleops fluid 2's are good too (though perhaps not as durable), from what I hear.

Here's my review of the blackburn trakstand ultra (it uses the 1up resistance unit; blackburn makes the frame).
