Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

what would be a an upgrade??

Hey folks,
I am trying to purchase some new wheels, but the subject pool is just so large and i run into so many mixed reviews of wheelsets (yes i have been reading threads incessantly

I have a 98 trek 5200, it still has the stock wheels and they are looking pretty beat these days. the wheels are Matrix aurora rims with shimano 600 hubs. The wheels still roll great and i can sail by people on decents, but the rims are showing their age and i dont want to end up with a cracked rim 60 miles out.

so...my question is what would be an upgrade? I am looking at mavic open pros with ultegra (da is just to rich for me). I am trying to stick around or under 200.

also considering, mavic aksium, xero xr-1, mavic cxp22 on ultegra. are any of these an upgrade, or am i just side stepping? (i also think i want more spokes as I live in brooklyn where the roads are not always just like glass).

thanks for the help

I have a set of open pro with chorus hubs and like them very much great all around wheel. Had a mechanic over tension them and crack one rim but that's another story. What type of riding are planning on them. different tools for different jobs
