Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

So now we know ABH is all leg with no arm length. That's why he's always telling people they ride too low and stretched out....because his torso and arms are too short to ever be comfortable on any normal setup.

It's all starting to make sense.

Us good midwesterners of German heritage are all torso with no legs. If you used the stand flat footed over the top tube rule of thumb I would be riding a 48cm and the bars would be in my crotch.

At least I'd be upright though

If you can stand flat-footed over your bike without pain from the top tube pressing into your crotch, it is unlikely the frame is too big. Getting a good fit requires knowing your ideal saddle height, bar drop, and cockpit length. After you dial in a fit to within about 1/8th inch on those three dimensions, your bike will feel great while riding.

The road bikes that fit me best (at 5' 9" 3/4 inches tall) are in the size 58 to size 60 range). But, by dialing in saddle height, bar drop, and cockpit length, I can get an equally good fit on bikes in the size 55 to size 62 range. But, if a frame is waaay too small, getting a good fit requires an extremely tall stem, which can impact the handling of the bike.
Please don't tell people this. You are evidently a morphological freak at 5'9, riding a 59ish bike.

People, get a professional fitting if you have worries about your bike. The fitter will take into account your riding style and any issues you have. Then buy the bike from there. Toptube in the crotch doesn't cut it with modern bikes. I'm a hair over 6' on a 56cm tt. The original fitter swore that it would be too small until he saw me on it. No matter what he input and switched, the best position for me was with a 56cm tt and 110mm stem.

thanks for that advice alan..

im 5'11' and some change and i ride a 58 and i've been feeling a little stretched out, however, it's my first road bike and i just bought it recently so i don't know much about sizing, they sized it for me at the lbs but said i could bring it back for resizing if it didn't feel right. i'm thinking i will get the bike resized and try raising the handle bars a bit more like you suggested, but if i can't get it to fit right i think i'm going to sell the bike and buy the 2005 57 orbea onix that i've been eyeing at another shop.

hey since i've already gotten the bike sized at the shop i bought it from do you guys recommend getting it sized again at a different shop? the shop i bought it at is ok..but i think some of the smaller shops might know a little more about sizing, i only got the bike from this one because it was a great deal, brand new 07 f4 for 1725..

I found this website and found it useful. After being sold a bike one size smaller I should have, I triend to earn more about sizing myself and what position I am comfortable with. I have slightly short legs and a long torso but large feet and long arms for a 5 feet 9 inch height. It shows a size range instead of a specific size and dont trust bike company sizing as they are sometimes very different to each other. An example is BMC...their sizes run larger so it seems...

May I suggest this website: https://www.prodigalchild.net/Bicycle6.htm#FrameChart

Hope this helps!

crghill says he is looking for a trade with someone with too small of a frame; I am one of those people, looking ot make an offer. My bike is only 2 months old but the LBS owner is a jackass...

Oh yeah, I am about 6 foot and this bike is too small: about 7 1/2 inches of seatpost sticking out, and with my seat all the way forward I still have no chance to get my knees over te axles.... Let me know

I'm 5'9 and ride a 56... maybe a tad on the big side, but I didn't want a big drop from saddle to bars.
