Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Near brush with the famous

So today i am cruisin down Hwy 12 in Nother Ca. just outside of Sonoma. The wind is behind me so i am easily doin 24-28 mph with minimal effort. Cars are starting to back up in an area that always see's a bit of traffic as you head into town. I am to the right of the white line and there is PLENTY of room in this particular section for cars and bikes.
A nice Jeep style vehicle (I actually believe it to be some type of a Land Rover)passes me with a very nice bike on the back. As the traffic begins to back up I am passing cars at a fairly quick rate, alls well, until said vehichle decides he is going to turn right (Which he had a turn lane to do so, so no problem)except he doesn't LOOK before he gets into said lane which at that point in time had me in it. I grab a handful, swing around to the left to avoid him and I get next to him to see.........

it's Robin Williams. I politely say, "please look before you turn". I then proceed and he and i are goin in the same direction, i pass him several times and he me and he never once even acknowledges me with a polite I am sorry or even a polite wave. I think he was embarrased, and oh he knew I knew who he was cause i yelled "hey Robin how's it goin" after we both turned off the hiway. He has a place in town here and i have seen him several times before (both on and off the bike) and has always been kind and polite for the most part. End of story of my near brush with a "famous cyclist".

Speaking of celebs and driving:

I once stood behind Ray Charles in a line for a rental car. I'm hoping that guy standing next to him was actually going to drive it.

He's a nice guy - has stopped by the Bicycle Kitchen in the past to build a fixie or two for a friend - and I'm sure he was just really embarrassed.

He's lucky... if he were not a celeb the OP probably would have given him an ear-full along with the bird.

Still not cool that he didn't at least acknowledge his wrong doing. Unless he was so oblivious and didn't know you were there. Kinda sucks since he's such a big cycling fan.

I reponded to him as I would anyone, (if i can catch them at all) by trying to give a polite "please look in your mirror". No sense in yellin at someone and have them take it out on the next rider down the road!

too many questions....

what kind of bike does he ride? What are the components? What tires does he use? Size? Does he "flip it"?

Being on both sides of the equation in this type of misunderstanding, accidents like the one you mention happen very frequently when it is car vs car. Passing car on the right side is just asking for someone to do it again. Yes, you have the lane. Yes, you have the "right of way" but in the end...dead is dead. Reads like you did the right thing and and reacted to the car instead of thinking the driver saw you.

As far as him talking to you, what did you want? him to do that hand puppet routine and say, "so sorry" in that nice accent he does? Maybe a wave but we are all human.

You shoulda "crashed" into the car.... Nice expensive cars should have been the sign.... The owner's insurance can pay for a brand new bike!

I'm sure he wasn't driving but I did see him interviewed once and he had the glass removed from the instruments of his private plane and could fly it. Had a sited pilot there too obviously.

You're lucky he didn't start in on you. You would have been laughing so hard you would have fallen and been run over and the paramedics would be all like, "whoa, he's on drugs or something because he is all giggly even while he is jammed into this tubular thing that looks like it was a wheelchair without enough wheels." Or something like that.

This is why it sucks to be a celebrity sometimes. Pcad is always stalked by curious fans.
