We bought two Garmin 305's and I kind of regret it. I'd rather have my cat-eye back or the polar wireless.

My cadence drops on and off...it is always something. I like Garmin products usually. I'm just getting fed up. Our issues are times two, it was the same batch, the early ones.

The Sigma sounds good, but what are these O rings everyone speaks of, and what makes them so much of an issue?

I had one and it went out in 4 months. I bought another one and that one lasted 6 months. Now I use cat eye Strada. I've had it on for over a year and no problems.

OTOH, I bought 1606L DTS for me and a non cadence model for my wife two years ago. Both are going strong.

My Cateye Astrale finally died so I just picked up a Cateye V3. (I may regret this. The basic Astrale has been a great computer. Simple and sleek.) Anyway, I received it in the mail yesterday and will hook it up today. It's the triple wireless 2.4 ghz model tracking speed, cadence, and heart rate.

The first thing I noticed as I unpacked it is that the sensor is HUGE. Much larger than the single wireless model. You can pick it up for around $165 if you check around the net.

We'll see how the set up and functionality goes. The quick setup guide looks pretty easy. The first thing I need to do is strip off all the wires from my old unit :p. I'm hoping to be able to switch it between 2 different bikes. I'll keep you posted.

Your not that anal, because you don't mind your current speed being rounded to the nearest 0.5.

Good point, I'd completely forgotten the Sigma rounded current speed to .5 mph. Seems like a non factor compared to average speed precision since I generally just glance at current speed vs. looking for change in average speed. It's frustrating (less motivating) to finish a ride hard without seeing any change in average speed.

Just got a Garmin Edge 350 and it does everything I want- Perfectly.

Why did I wait so long?

Easy- they are not cheap but some killer deals to be found with the new range coming out.

Cjzoller 03-29-08 01:13 PM

Easy answer. The company that has support right here on BF:)

Anyone else using a Vetta V100? It's one of my favorites so far, but the included mount is only for the bar. I have also had very good luck with VDO units, although they are hard to find. I have a C5+ on my MTB, and it has been trouble free for years.

s4one 03-29-08 02:33 PM

I currently use Polar but I would recommend Cateye because it is easier to use. My next computer will be cateye.

darthcheese 03-29-08 05:37 PM

i just installed a polar cs200cad on my bike and so far so good...although the fact that the batteries are not replaceable is a bit disconcerting...im not sure if i would have bought this if i had known ahead of time...

Purchased this unit over 1.5 years ago at my LBS.

However, Amazon.com has Sigma Sport BC1606L DTS Wireless Bike Computer with Cadence for $51.95

The Cateye Micro Wireless is quite cheap, but I recommend spending the extra $5 to get the Strada Wireless.

I have both and I believe there are two non-function-related shortcomings of the Micro:
  1. The head unit doesn't fit tightly into its holder, and "buzzes" when going over rough roads. I spent a couple of dozen miles trying to track down this buzz, thinking it was my STI levers.
  2. Both the head unit and the sensor are significantly larger for the Micro, compared to the Strada. The Strada is much sleeker and aesthetically pleasing. The "invisible button" design of the Strada is also very cool.

Please note that there is absolutely nothing wrong, functionally, with either the Micro or the Strada. Both meters had performed exceptionally well for me, and I had never noticed any dropped signals like I do for my Polar wireless.

Good post any other suggestions?

Cateye V2c or V3 if you want heart rate too.

On the sensors there is a U shaped channel on either side of the sensor. The o-ring sits into this u-shaped channel, wraps around the fork or chainstay and then hooks into the u-shaped channel on the other side. The problem is that the o-rings get old and start to crack and then they will break and there goes your sensor. The cadence sensor allows you to use zip ties as an alternative but the speed sensor does not. You can buy the o-rings at any local hardware store, so as long as you catch them before they break it is not an issue. It was rumored at one time that Sigma was going to redesign the speed sensor to use zip ties but to my knowledge they have not done so as of yet.

I just purchased a V2c over the weekend. Unfortunately I have to wait for it to be shipped, so it won't be here for another week or so. Once it arrives and I use it I'll be happy to post a write up.

I LOVE the Sigma BC2006 MHR. It's wireless. It's also MUCH more accurate than the Trek Incite ACH digital I'm forced to use until I get a new sensor (read below). For every 10 miles, it reads .4ths of a mile SHORT which means it raeds my speed slower and averages slower than normal, inluding mileage. Also the altitude feature reads much higher than my Sigma (ie: not realistic). The Sigma is actually quite accurate and reads several functions on the screen at once instead of having to cycle through each individual section. It reads all the regular distance, speed, averages etc and also includes altitude info and a heart rate monitor. You can find them for less than $100 several places online. The O-rings do stink though. I ended up destroying the speed sensor because it shifted slightly and contacted the magnet and was destroyed (I was doing over 30 mph when it happened). You can set it up where you need it with the o-rings around the fork and then put electrical tape around the o-ring to keep the sensor from moving around. I did that but still had a problem. I'm going to silicone my new sensor to my fork in the proper position, then use the o-rings AND then electrical tape over them. Hopefully I won't have anymore problems!

I've used the Garmin 305 before. I've noticed it is slow to update speed as you accelerate, which can be fustrating but otherwise it's pretty good.

I just got a trek 9i team wireless on clearance for $20. Not sure how their reputation is, but I have found it to be pretty good (thought I just got it a week ago). Worth looking into for the price if you can find on at a local store on clearance. I think they discontinued the model or something.

ukie 03-31-08 05:31 PM

Don't buy wireless VDOs. Imo they don't like water and road dirt.
