Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Carbon Cranks...

I'm running Ultegra now but would like to shave some weight.

What would be a top notch carbon crankset?

The FSA Carbon Crank is the lightest in the test at 252 grams, 9% lighter than the heaviest crank in the test (Shimano Ultegra). The spread from heaviest to lightest was 22 grams, less than 1 ounce. To put that in perspective a pair of Oakley Twenty sunglasses weighs 24 grams. So, switching from an Ultegra crank to an FSA Carbon Pro Team crank is about the same as taking off your sunglasses.

What the F are you talking about? I think you should buy whatever cranks you like and you should decide what is important to you, but posting that statement without noting the the rest of the article, most importantly the part where they ONLY TEST 4 CRANKS WHICH ARE ALL SHIMANO COMPATIBLE (not to mention the older cranks non-ISIS cranks, and they are only talking about the drive side, so you also have to add the difference in weight on the non-drive side) is misleading at best.

Campy stuff is lighter. Not to mention that there are a lot fo other cranks out there too. You can decide how much lighter or better performing something has to be to make it worth it for you.

Realistically, the differece between Ultegra cranks and the lightest cranks on the market is going to be something like half a pound, probably more when you add in the difference in the BB.

Record UT, because it includes the BB.

The FSA K-force CT is also very light.

And, if you've got the $$$...

Zipp.

Apparently most everyone thus far is missing the question, except for botto who asked a more apt question.
BT - what botto is getting at is that you may want to consider getting a lighter wheelset.

Anyway, as for your question, that I highlighted above (and most people missed):

Top Notch Carbon Cranksets:

-THM Clavicula
-Storck Powerarms (does not include BB/chainrings)
-ZIPP 300 or ZIPP Vuma Quad
-FSA K-Force Light (however you may want to consider changing the chainrings, according to reports)

Those are a few of the Top Notch CARBON Cranksets.

Top Notch NON-Carbon Cranksets:

-Tune Bigfoot (or Fastfoot, depending on your BB choice)
-M5 Crankset
-KCNC Bearbone
-Extralite Ebones QRC

What is your budget? If you want to spend $1000, get the Zip four bolt with the ceramic bottom bracket.

Please don't post statements like this when you are flat out wrong. The difference is around 300 grams between lightest and heavist. Zipp is light at 440 grams but it's roughly $1,000. That's about 100 grams lighter than DA or 120 grams lighter than Record.

There's the potential to shave about 250 grams with highend carbon cranks vs your Ultegra (including the BB weight.) Campy Record will not give you a 250 gram savings - you have to get a boutique crankset.

The linked "article" is inaccurate.

in your opinion would this be a better advantage for me instead of a lighter crank?

also, are the ksyrium wheels not all that special?

yes

depends on your perspective. Nice wheels (better than my equipes), but nothing compared to some of the really high end lightweight and/or aero stuff.

You get more bang for the weight buck by going to a Ti BB.

You get more bang performance wise switching to lighter pedals and shoes to decrease rotational weight.

That said, I love my K-force and Pro-team Issue FSA carbon cranks. I was upgrading from D/A 7400, so I did notice a differnce in the stiffness. Stiffer was my main reason for wanting carbon cranks.
