Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Essential Gear

I'm new to biking and I was wondering what would be considered the essential gear while you are out biking, from clothes to tools to accessories.

Thanks in advance.

Bikes: Surly Pacer, Hillbrick Pista, Avanti Sprint, Commencal Combi Deluxe

Off the top of my head: jersey, bib knicks, helmet, sunglasses, gloves, cycling shoes, socks, saddle bag, multi tool, pump, spare tube, tyre levers, water bottles, bottle cages.

As the weather gets cooler: base layer, arm warmer, leg warmers, vest, cap, headband, jacket, rain jacket, shoe covers, mudguard

Hope that helps

A color coordinated kit.

Wheels that cost more than the GNP of Ethiopia, and are lighter than the vacuum of space.

Daniel's done a nice job on listing the basics. You can go out and just shopping list these items and grab whatever catches your eye or whatever the sales guy recommends. It'd be really useful to you though, and save you a lot of $$$ in the end, to have a really experienced rider go out with you to help you purchase these items. For example, rain fenders are rain fenders, pretty much, and any pair will do, but some time should be spent on picking up good bibs with a good chamois. This is where function should trump form. And while you needn't fuss too much over leg warmers, a good deal of time should be spent finding the right pair of shoes for you.

An experienced companion can help you with all this; we've all wasted money. Sometimes the sales guy can't be trusted as he's trying to move stock.

You should be able to pick up some winter gear pretty cheap this time of year. Go ahead and get it now, you'll thank me later. Other things while at the shop to look at are floor pumps, chain lubes, chain and bike cleaners, basic work stand.
