I do, unless I'm in heavy traffic, then I like to hear when a car is about to run me down...

Always. Just reloaded my Ipod this morning. F all the naysayers.
A good rider with an Ipod is much less a threat than an idiot without one. When in groups, havta keep the volume low enough to talk.

I do, but only one earphone (in-ear) so I can hear my music, but can also hear traffic (very little where I live)

i jam my thumbs up and back into the tubes. this way i can point my fingers straight out in front to split the wind and attain an even more aero profile, and the usual fixed gear - zen - connectedness feeling through the drivetrain is multiplied ten fold because my thumbs become one with the tubing.

I listen to music when I ride solo. I have it on pretty quiet though, so I can hear traffic. I cannot stand listening to my own breathing.

I listen to music when riding but always low enough that I can hear everything around me. When riding in groups though, I usually don't have it on.

I use my phone as my mp3 player. Good too just in case i need to make a call or receive a call while I am riding. I usually just put the phone in my pocket though. Never bothers me or changes on it's own.

Always. 90% of the time I only use the right bud.
BTW: You can get the 1G shuffle pretty cheap.

Always have my little iPod Shuffle with me....It's pretty rural where I ride, but I still leave one ear bud out.

I started listening to music last summer on solo rides, after having avoided it for many years. I use one earbud only, right ear. I keep the volume low, I can still hear cars and the environment around me. I really enjoy it - it gives me a little extra kick and push while I'm out there.
I use an iPod shuffle I got as a wedding party gift. It fits in my jersey pocket and doesn't take up space like a full size iPod would - and if it gets trashed - no big deal.
I also found this single earbud stereo - which works great - and it was $6.
